About this listen

Ben Aaronovitch has stormed the best-seller list with his superb London crime series - a unique blend of police procedural; loving detail about the greatest character of all, London; and a dash of the supernatural.

A mutilated body in Crawley. Another killer on the loose. The prime suspect is one Robert Weil: an associate of the twisted magician known as the Faceless Man? Or just a common or garden serial killer?

Before PC Peter Grant can get his head round the case, a town planner going under a tube train and a stolen grimoire are adding to his caseload.

So far so London.

But then Peter gets word of something very odd happening in Elephant and Castle, on a housing estate designed by a nutter, built by charlatans, and inhabited by the truly desperate.

Is there a connection?

And if there is, why oh why did it have to be South of the River?

Full of warmth, sly humour and a rich cornucopia of things you never knew about London, Aaronovitch's series has swiftly added Grant's magical London to Rebus' Edinburgh and Morse's Oxford as a destination of choice for those who love their crime with something a little extra.

Read by Kobna Holdbrook-Smith.

An excellent addition to the Peter Grant Series

The series follows likeable and well rounded characters in a vibrantly realised version of our world where magic exists and the long arm of the law has extended to police all things unconventional.

The latest adventure keeps things moving along swiftly, ratcheting up the tension as the pursuit of the "Faceless Man" intensifies. In addition, the narrator does a great job with the different characters, injecting warmth and humour into the performance.

Can't wait for the next in the series!

Another Brilliant Listen.

Any additional comments?

The whole series has been fantastic. Hurry up Ben, I need another one soon. The characters are so full of life and the stories are quite mad but totally believable. Kobna Holdbrook-Smith does a fantastic job. His voice is a delight and his characterisation is top notch. I would recommend listening to the others in the series before coming straight to this one.

Keeping up the great story

I love this series, and this is yet another grand chapter. This picks up the meta-story a bit, and towards the end, a lot. This is something I'm happy about as the last book didn't feel like it was really going anywhere. This book meanders at times, but it does so in the way that make this series feel real, despite the supernatural elements.

More, More! ... Please?

Would you listen to Broken Homes again? Why?

I listened to it once, twice and I am now on my third time round. This is not because it's difficult to follow or because I keep nodding off but because it's a ripping story.

What other book might you compare Broken Homes to, and why?

The fourth book in the series and hopefully not the last. I was so astounded by the ending of this volume I can honestly say "I never saw it coming".

Have you listened to any of Kobna Holdbrook-Smith’s other performances? How does this one compare?

The narration by Kobna Holdbrook-Smith is spot on and totally flawless as always. As a Londoner I appreciate not having to listen to someone faking a London accent it never sounds quite right. "Know what I mean?"

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

The book had me tittering to myself on the morning train up to London whilst the suspense kept me from nodding off going home again at night.

Any additional comments?

his book will guarantee you plenty of personal space on the daily slog to work. No one ever sits by the crazy person on the train do they? If you have a boring commute listen to these books and let a little crazy laughter into your life. I dare you, be a little devilish...

Another great adventure of PC Peter Grant

Yep big fan of the book serie and of its narrator, gulping them all. This one is a favourite as it lingers on one of the estate - similar to the one I grew up in not glamorising it but not making it worse than too many authors have made them to be.

Great book to much bad language

Great story the only bit I don't like is the amount of bad language the whole series contains some wich does annoy me as I don't use it don't like it. But it seems to come with most adult books these days. Does mean that listening to the books with children around is hard
