Summary
From the author of Mayflies, an irresistible, thoroughly enjoyable state-of-the-nation novel - the story of one man's epic fall from grace.
May 2021. London.
Campbell Flynn - art historian and celebrity intellectual - is entering the empire of middle age. Fuelled by an appetite for admiration and the finer things, controversy and novelty, he doesn't take people half as seriously as they take themselves. Which will prove the first of his huge mistakes.
The second? Milo Manghasa, his beguiling and provocative student. Milo inhabits a more precarious world, has experiences and ideas which excite his teacher. He also has a plan.
Over the course of an incendiary year, a web of crimes and secrets and scandals will be revealed, and Campbell Flynn may not be able to protect himself from the shattering exposure of all his privilege really involves. But then, he always knew: when his life came tumbling down, it would occur in public.
Critic reviews
'A brilliant state-of-the-nation novel that pulls down the facades of high society, and knocks over the 'good liberal' house-of-cards. O'Hagan is not only a peerless chronicler of our times, but has other gifts - of generosity, humour and tenderness.' Monica Ali

Excellent
Well crafted and interesting storyline, if a little bleak at times, brilliant narration. Highly recommend.

Amazing cast of characters reflecting the times we live in!
It’s a great “state of the nation” novel, very well read, but possibly a bit over long

The best book of 2024
Andrew O’Hagan is a genius! He twists and turns these characters but always within the bounds of reality. I feel as if I’ve met every single one of them. Michael Abubakar is a superb reader who colours every character perfectly. This is the must read of 2024!!

Stunning novel and narration
A breathtaking mosaic of contemporary British life and manners - not to be missed. The modern day Thackeray? May well explore the author's other works on the basis of this.
The narrator brought the story and characters to life in a tour de force of accents and performance. Will be watching for more of his performances.
Kept me entertained from start to finish and can't recommend it enough.
Thanks author and narrator for your brilliant work

Would be a good 6 part TV series !?!
Being set in the recent past makes it seem to be a docudrama that covers a number of subjects that get tide together in a Tom Wolfe manner staged well in London.

A compelling and engrossing novel
An engrossing and masterful work of fiction and a critique of contemporary Britain, the establishment that underpins it, and inequalities that haunt the modern world.
I was throughly engaged from the start by the host of convincing and compelling characters and the rollercoaster ride Andrew O’Hagan takes us on, through inter-connected worlds of politics, business, academia, and organised crime. Caledonian Road- at times hilarious, shocking, and also very sad- is brought to life by the stunning performance of narrator, Michael Abubakar. Highly recommended.

Wow
This book is beyond exceptional. Incredible read really shines in a mirror to London today. Lots of characters to follow and all get a storyline. This book is heartbreaking at times and uplifting in others. And the narrator does a great job. Characterisation is as great as Zadie Smith.

A saga for our time
Enjoyed enormously - reminded me of Capital from a few years ago. Good narration despite the Scottish the instead of thee before vowels.
