About this listen
It is barely three months since the murder of his wife and Thomas Lynley takes to the South-West Coast Path in Cornwall, determined to walk its length in an attempt to distract himself from his loss. On the forty-third day of this walk, he sees a cliff climber fall to his death - a death apparently witnessed by a surfer in a nearby cove. Shortly afterwards, Lynley encounters a young woman from Bristol whose personal history is a blank before her thirteenth year.
These events propel him into a case that brings Barbara Havers from London and thrusts both detectives into a world where revenge is only one of the motives they must sift through to identify a killer.

A great story beautifully written as always but the reading could have done with some differentials between the voices perhaps to help keep the characters separate in one’s mind. I like Charles Keating’s reading voice. But why does he take on a slightly whining, supplicating tone when he does women’ s speech. Also why does everyone sound sinister, cynical, world weary or accusative. Are we in some weird world where the reader has to take the joy out of personal relationships simply because this is a murder thriller? I don’t imagine Elizabeth George would be very ‘thrilled’ about that. Having said this these are the negative points. The good points are that I listened the whole way through. I could fall asleep to Charles voice- that’s a good thing. He didn’t intrude too much . So all in all really quite ok.
