About this listen

Two murders. One Town. And a lifetime of secrets.

The number one New York Times best-selling author of the Natchez Burning trilogy returns with an electrifying stand-alone. A tale of friendship, betrayal and shattering secrets that threaten to destroy a small Mississippi town.

Some things should never be uncovered....

When successful journalist Marshall McEwan discovers that his father is terminally ill, he returns to his childhood home in Bienville, Mississippi - a place he vowed to leave behind forever.

His family’s newspaper is failing; and Jet Turner, the love of his youth, has married into the family of Max Matheson, one of the powerful patriarchs who rule the town through the exclusive Poker Club.

Bienville is on the brink of economic salvation, in the form of a billion-dollar Chinese paper mill. But as the deal nears completion, two murders rock the town to its core, threatening far more than the city’s economic future.

Marshall and Jet soon discover a minefield of explosive secrets beneath the soil of Mississippi. And by the time Marshall grasps the long-buried truth about his own history - and the woman he loves - he would give almost anything not to face it.

Critic reviews

"Pure reading pleasure. This guy knows the deep south as well or better than any other novelist." (Stephen King)

"An ambitious stand-alone thriller that is both an absorbing crime story and an in-depth exploration of grief, betrayal and corruption.... Iles’s latest calls to mind the late, great Southern novelist Pat Conroy. Like Conroy, Iles writes with passion, intensity and absolute commitment." (Washington Post)

Angst galore

I always enjoy Greg Isles, his Natchez Trilogy is a masterpiece of plotting. This isn’t in quite the same category, but nevertheless is entertaining. The performance on the other hand is so over melodramatic that you need to take it in slices. Scott Brick sounds like an extra in General Hospital whose acting tutor was Joey from Friends. He is so angst filled that he sounds constantly on the verge of tears. Clearly no one told him that drama is all the better for being eased out rather than delivered at a constant pace. The only time his ‘acting’ improves (slightly) is when he’s doing the 3rd person reading, unfortunately most of the book is first person.

Cemetery Road

Scott Brick is the perfect narrator for this audible.I read Cemetery Road awhile back, and i consider it one of Greg Iles better novels. This audible for some reason struck me as a darker listen where as the book was a solid read.I did enjoy this though. But Audible why is there no Natchez trilogy to purchase?.

A bit long winded

Seemed very 'padded out,' with considerable repetition of ancillary parts of the story away from the main plot. Of course you have to have background, but it is unnecessary to go over the same ground several times. Also, too much titillation with descriptions of sexual trysts which were referred to again and again. Disappointing.
