About this listen
Rule number one: Don’t fall in love with the coach.
Gabriel Theriault’s been skating on thin ice for the past two seasons with Toronto, but his arrest following an off-ice fight is the final straw.
His only shot at redemption is to start over in Evanston and prove that he still has what it takes to be a pro player.
No more fights. No more drinking. No more random hookups.
Rule number two: The team always comes first.
Years ago, Lance Tate’s on-ice injury ended his career and marriage.
His long road to recovery led to a job he loves as assistant coach with the Evanston Otters, and he wouldn’t dream of giving that up.
Until he meets Gabriel.
The French Canadian is 15 years younger, burdened by too much responsibility, and the most intriguing man Lance has ever met.
He’s also the absolute last man Lance should get involved with.
The draw between them is impossible to resist—even if it could cost them the game they love.
Their only chance at winning it all is to change the rules.
Trigger warning: Changing the Rules includes a supporting character with advancing dementia. Frank discussion about an emotionally neglectful parent and verbal abuse. Use of mild homophobic slurs and brief mention of suicidal ideation (non-graphic).

Gabriel and Lance's story was entertaining, exciting and romantic with a happy ending. I loved Lance simply because he cares so much and he is always there for others. Be it Gabriel or someone in his family. At the same time his past is heartbreaking.
I had a lot of sympathy for Gabriel because he had to deal with so much and it wasn't always easy for him.
And then there's the career of the two of them, which doesn't allow for an outing.
I liked the story and I liked how the relationship between the two of them developed and how Gabriel allowed people to help him.
An entertaining story with great characters.
The narrator did a good job. I could tell the protagonists apart well and the pace of speech was okay too. But it would have been nice if the speaker had emphasized a bit more.
Great story

I enjoyed the story, I'm a bit all over the place reading this series out of order but I don't think that has affected my enjoyment of it. I liked Gabe and Lance and I enjoyed seeing their relationship grow from player and assistant coach to romance and a HEA. Learning about dementia brought on from CTE that Gabe's father is suffering from was sad, especially since Gabe was dealing with it by himself and learning what a selfish ass his father had been when he was growing up and how by making Gabe keep it to himself he continued to be a selfish ass, it made it hard to have much compassion for his father, my compassion was all for Gabe.
There was a fair bit of angst around the relationship that Gabe and Lance fell into, some because of their respective roles and some because 'coming out' in sports is still hard for players. I liked how supportive the majority of the team was.
The narrator was my biggest issue with this book, some parts were done really well, but other parts dragged and the voice became monotonous to listen to, I probably should have tried to up the speed slightly to see if that helped.
I'm looking forward to reading or listening to the rest of this series.
An enjoyable story
