Syed Haleem Najibi is a performer, youth worker and activist who works with refugees and asylum seekers through the arts. He has worked with ‘Theatre Company of Sanctuary’ Phosphoros Theatre as an actor since 2015 and is now on the board of trustees. Originally from Afghanistan, much of Syed’s work reflects on his own background of being an unaccompanied child refugee, and he regularly speaks at events and in print about his lived experience. Alongside socially engaged arts, Syed is studying sustainable energy engineering at Queen Mary University.

heartbreaking

Although this is marketed as a children's book I think it's a book everyone should read. I was deeply moved, shocked, angered, saddened by the very real events that children in camps around the world have been subjected to. The narration and musical accompaniment was perfect. Although a relatively short read, it's one that will stay with me for a very long time.

It was heartbreaking, encouraging, funny all in one.
What a great book I thoroughly enjoyed it, gives perspective where news and misinformation run a muck.
The characters were real and interesting it was not full of woe but resilience and endurance.
Everyone should have a bit more tolerance and understanding. 👍👍

This book took me by complete surprise with its eloquent writing almost making one feel uncomfortable if they or their children haven't had to face similar challenges. The author portrays so vividly the life of a child refugee, left at the mercy of strangers, usually without their family and no form of identity. None of this is the child's fault of course. It compels one to action. Highly recommended.

A vivid peek into child-refugee life

Its a tale told by a 10-year old african boy held up in a refugee camp somewhere. He has been separated by his family and everything that he held dear or that gave him identity has been lost. And yet he has survived and has an identity still. He is surrounded by other kids his age with similar challenges, some older, some as young as 3. I really enjoyed the melancholy of the concept, the simple things that bring this group joy - eating the core of an apple eaten by the guards, finding shoes that fit from a discarded pile, and playing with puppets made of trash. Its poignant, thoughtful and heart touching. The second half is more tedious as things get complex for this group. Overall I would recommend a read/listen!

Something so horrific almost should not be able to be changed into something as beautiful as this. It was wonderful. Exquisitely written. And beautifully performed.

Tried a few times but failed. Shame, sorry. Was really difficult as I am always reading or listening to books and love them. Can listen more than once. But it got me filling to sleep.
