About this listen

Victor Mancini, a medical school dropout, is an antihero for our deranged times. Needing to pay elder care for his mother, Victor has devised an ingenious scam: He pretends to choke on pieces of food while dining in upscale restaurants. He then allows himself to be “saved” by fellow patrons who, feeling responsible for Victor’s life, go on to send checks to support him.

When he’s not pulling this stunt, Victor cruises sexual-addiction-recovery workshops for action, visits his addled mom, and spends his days working at a colonial theme park.

His creator, Chuck Palahniuk, is the visionary we need and the satirist we deserve.

Critic reviews

"One of the freshest, most intriguing voices to appear in a long time. He rearranges Vonnegut's sly humor, DeLillo's mordant social analysis, and Pynchon's antic surrealism (or is it R. Crumb's?) into a gleaming puzzle palace all its own." ( Newsday)
"At times very funny. Also sick and perverted....Readers will love it. Readers will hate it and be offended by it. Must listen to figure out what you think." ( AudioFile)
"Displays a Swiftian gift for satire, as well as a knack for crafting mesmerizing sentences that loom with stark, prickly prose and repetitive rhythms." ( San Francisco Examiner)

though flat toward the end this story was evocative and emotional.

Really enjoyed the narration from the author. No one does it better

Palahniuk loves to dabble with Freudian theories and apply them to his characters. Interesting take on the human existence and addiction. Some insightful quotes are included, makes you question a lot of things.

Fascinating read

Sometimes funny but not much of a story. I just barely stuck with it. The end.

Chuck Palahniuk is the best narrator for his own books. He has such a monotone voice, just perfect for his kind of stories.

Great narrator

Relating to the Narrator in Fight Club immediately, I was slightly disheartened I didn't take to Victor from the get go. I felt his character was a thinner melancholic reinvention of the aforementioned (especially at the start with the long self-depreciating monologue, very similar nihilistic thinking and life unfulfilled) but sticking with it he really started to grow on me and his character filled out. The twisted humor in this book is fantastically refreshing to hear now in a world of 'woke' and the overall story comes crazily together like the carts of a rollercoaster crash. Palahniuk's short and sharp writing is a style that keeps me engaged and I will be looking out for more often. Certainly no pages of waffle like needlessly describing a rooms decor or whatever so thanks Chuck! Would highly recommend.

Stick with it/ Please write more!

Some great unique concepts and ideas, unfortunately without enough of a logical plot to tie it all together in a way that makes you want to keep reading.

Very enjoyable and would recommend. Well read and made extra special by Chuck Palahniuk reading it. Contains a nice couple of chapters at the end; one Chuck talks about the inspirations behind the novel and the second where he discusses his work.

Great novel all the better for Chuck reading it

Took me a while to work out what was going on, but I throughly enjoyed the story once I got into it.

Audiobook: Even though the monotone style of the narrator fits the book well, I ended up returning this title. Tried first to just listen while strolling but had to pick the book up quickly.

Book: I decided to take a chance with a genre I usually don’t read, and it took a while before I realized what was going on. It had some laugh out-moments and it got better as the story went on.

Monotonous
