About this listen
A completely gripping psychological thriller
I pinch the screen to zoom until I’m staring at the face of a ghost. A man with very short hair, staring directly at the camera with piercing brown eyes.
He is as he was when I last saw him: wrinkles around the corners of the eyes and a knowing smirk. That’s the expression I see when I can’t sleep.
My body tenses. It can’t be him. It’s not my ex-husband. It’s not David.
I know that better than anyone because he didn’t walk out on me.
He didn’t disappear two years ago and he’s not a missing person.
I know that for a fact because I’m the one who killed him.
A brilliantly twisty thriller which will have fans of The Girl on the Train and Gone Girl absolutely gripped.
©2019 Kerry Wilkinson (P)2019 BookoutureThis is certainly a different kind of thriller. Morgan Persephone tells us right at the start that she killed her husband a couple of years ago. What she doesn't understand are the various clues that keep coming up suggesting that he may not be dead after all.
The story as a whole is narrated by Morgan in two separate timelines:
In "The Why" timeline Morgan starts to explain to us how she came to kill her husband 2 years ago.
In The Now" timeline, Morgan has moved on with her life, she is a successful personal trainer and has a new boyfriend Andy, with whom she is planning to move in together. The clues about her former husband however keep appearing and playing on her mind.
The book was not well written, I struggled to visualise the scenes and engage with the characters, there was something missing. I persevered with this story confident that the boring bit was just scene setting and that the best bit was yet to come. It never did.
The ending when it came was particularly weak and unsatisfactory.
The narrator was OK. She spoke so slowly that I had to use the 1.25x playback speed on the App to make her sound normal.
I can't believe it's not better
