About this listen

The second book in Dorothy L Sayers Lord Peter Wimsey series - a must-listen for fans of Agatha Christie's Poirot and Margery Allingham's Campion Mysteries.

The Duke of Denver, accused of murder, stands trial for his life in the House of Lords.

Naturally, his brother Lord Peter Wimsey is investigating the crime - this is a family affair. The murder took place at the duke's shooting lodge and Lord Peter's sister was engaged to marry the dead man.

But why does the duke refuse to co-operate with the investigation? Can he really be guilty, or is he covering up for someone?

A classic whodunnit of intrigue around the upper class of England in a bygone era. Whimsical and melodramatic but clever and entertaining with colourful characters and twists. Well performed given the number of voices. Recommend

Classic intriguing whodunnit

I think this is the best of Lord Peter Wimsey books on Audible. I've listened to it many times. Robert Bathurst's narration is excellent.

Wonderful Sayers story. More convoluted than usual but full of brilliance and humour. Brilliantly narrated. A joy!

What all that's going on I needed some escapism so tried this havingstarted with the first one. Have discovered that I really like Sayers' writing. It is surprisingly modern and often very funny. What makes it for me is Robert Bathhurst's brilliant reading. His great range of voices and characters really enhances the entertainment and keeps the plot straight. I do hope Mr Bathhurst plans to record the whole series.

I always hoped somebody would record better audio versions of the Lord Peter Wimsey books and they finally have! This did not disappoint. Very enjoyable listen. Fans of classic and golden age detective stories should find this recording very satisfying. And if like me you like falling asleep to a mystery, the good news is this one doesn't have any grating voices or big changes in volume.

At last!

Enjoyable second in the LPW series. All of the usual cast of characters make a return. This second story is more melodramatic than whose body, which had quite dark undertones. Impy Biggs does his stuff in court and is done well by Bathurst, as are all of the characters. The dialogue interchanges between LPW and his sister Mary are very well done, and Bathurst captures the sibling bond very well. As I mentioned in my review for whose body, I sincerely hope H&S will Re do the entire LPW series with Bathurst.

Enjoyable LPW sequel

Unbelievably slow and boring. Narrator was not inspiring but the text was so dull. The plot was daft.

Tedious plot
