About this listen

Number-one New York Times best seller

From international phenomenon Angie Thomas comes a hard-hitting return to Garden Heights with the story of Maverick Carter, Starr’s father, set 17 years before the events of the award-winning The Hate U Give.

With his King Lord dad in prison and his mom working two jobs, 17-year-old Maverick Carter helps the only way he knows how: slinging drugs. Life's not perfect, but he's got everything under control. Until he finds out he's a father....

Suddenly it's not so easy to deal drugs and finish school with a baby dependent on him for everything. So when he's offered the chance to go straight, he takes it. But when King Lord blood runs through your veins, you don't get to just walk away.

Another great book by Angie Thomas

Concrete Rose by Angie Thomas
🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

Set 17 years before the events of The Hate U Give, Concrete Rose focuses on Starr's father and his attempts to do the right thing as a young father.

The Hate U Give is a book that still lingers with me and is a book I recommend to anyone that will listen. The film that was based on that book is a great watch.

I adored this book. The characters are so well written allowing you to feel part of the story. The inclusion of musical referfences throughout works well to keep you immersed as music is such a key part of the culture.

The joruney of Mav from teenager to father gives you the background info that I craved from the first book. Just helps to provide some context to why Mav was the way he was with his kids and also context on the past experiences of Mav and other characters that he grew up with.

This and The Hate U Give made me realise how important it is for me to read more culturally relevant books and books by POC authors. I find myself getting immersed so much quicker in a book. They feel less like a book and more like a story from my existing world if that makes any sense?

Because of this I haven't read a bad book by Angie Thomas.

Another incredible tale from Angie Thomas

I have given this book 5 stars because I read this book in a week. I first read The Hate U Give when it came out and that had a profound impact on my understanding of modern Black culture, life and history in America. I have since read On the Come Up which is incredible too. Angie Thomas will go down in history as one of the most talented writers of her generation. She has a raw talent that enables her readers to feel her diverse and unique characters, settings and storylines without it being forced. Dion Thomas was a brilliant story teller. I can’t wait for her to write another book and will be looking out for both her and Dion Thomas’ work in the future! Bless ❤️
