About this listen

'A nuanced, page-turning portrait.' Zadie Smith

'Brilliant.' Marian Keyes

'A sharp, darkly funny comment on modern relationships.' Sunday Telegraph

The critically-acclaimed debut novel from the globally bestselling author of Normal People and Beautiful World, Where Are You.

Frances is twenty-one years old, cool-headed and observant. At night she performs spoken word with her best friend Bobbi, who used to be her girlfriend. When they are befriended by Melissa, a well-known journalist who is married to Nick, an actor, they enter a world of beautiful houses, raucous dinner parties and holidays in Provence, beginning a complex ménage-à-quatre. But when Frances and Nick get unexpectedly closer, Frances is forced to honestly confront her own vulnerabilities for the first time.

Critic reviews

"This book. This book. I read it in one day. I hear I'm not alone." (Sarah Jessica Parker)

"Rooney shares with Plath a knack for particularising a feminine consciousness, and this novel is the best I've read on what it means to be young and female right now." (Daily Mail)

"Sally Rooney writes with a rare, thrilling confidence, in a lucid and exacting style uncluttered with the sort of steroidal imagery and strobe flashes of figurative language that so many dutifully literary novelists employ. This isn't to say that the novel lacks beauty. Its richness blooms quietly." (New Yorker)

Great narration poor story

I loved the narrator's voice, accent and tones, I think she made the book more interesting than it was. I did like the author's style of writing and the way she describes things but the plot itself was poor and I didn't really like any of the characters and by the end I'd lost patience with them all! Overall this was sadly a bit of a disappointment.

Spectacular writing , amazing performance

It’s my favorite book from Rooney, love her narrative style. I couldn’t stop listening, the performance of the narrator was outstanding, the best from any audiobook I’ve ever read

Reflective experience

I really enjoyed listening to this book. The writing is seemingly simple, very descriptive, but it made me picture each scene clearly and precisely. I liked the young-generation details incorporated in every interaction of characters, as well as the fact that although the plot isn't dense, it is never straightforward and it surprises at places. The narrator changes voices for each character which made me smile at times, and it served the purpose perfectly. I was reserving time slots to listen to it because I wanted to hear and focus on each word. It also helps to spark reflection for introverts.

Spoiled by fuzzy sound quality

Aoife McMahon's narration is excellent and Sally Rooney's writing is reliably brilliant BUT the audio quality is fuzzy as though it's coming through a thin layer of cotton wool. I've had to work really hard to overcome my aversion to this as the book and performance are really worth a listen.

Great story

Great listen. Great story and I could listen to the Irish accent all day. And did over two days at work.

Rooney does it again!

I loved Normal People and found myself loving this too. Drawn in by the complex characters and subtle action, I couldn't put it down. It's like a warm bath. Becoming a proper fan now- need to read all of Rooney's stuff. 10/10.

An interesting portrait on chronic pain

After reading Normal People, I gave this one a go, to fill out my knowledge of the Sally Rooney-verse. Without making comparisons, I really enjoy Rooney’s conversational, easy style. Her writing on endometriosis throughout CWF is a really compelling portrait of life with chronic pain. I will say I didn’t find the romance (if you can consider it romance!!) elements of the story so engaging, I often felt rather uncomfortable and disbelieving. Overall, a good book, an easy read, and a wonderful reading by McMahon.

Could listen to Aoife all day long

Would be 5 star if the character ‘Bobby’ wasn’t excruciatingly cringe. Aoife is incredible as always

Self-centred individuals.

To resume the book, it is a carousel that goes around and around. It does not end any different to how it starts. A group of self-centred individuals who are unable to put anyone happiness before themselves.

I guess I was expecting a bit of a more conflicting story in the sense that the characters would be challenged to chose between values, morals and their own feelings. In reality, when confronted with the question, they are pretty quick at doing whatever is best for their own interest.

I really enjoyed Normal people, so I had good expectations for this book. The book is not bad but it also lacks a bit of complexity.
