About this listen

Nell Reece has never known her mother, and her father's burden of guilt about his wife has kept him cowed for years, working as a common labourer on his sister's farm.

For all her aunt's spiteful attempts to break Nell's independent spirit, she has never succeeded. But now Nell, pregnant and alone, is forced to leave behind the men in her life, believing she might never be able to return.

With little but the clothes she wears, she travels across the Bedfordshire countryside of 1890. When she encounters a scruffy urchin called Kit, a ten-year-old orphan who's lived his whole life on the streets, she takes him under her wing. The pair become devoted friends, never knowing where their journey will take them, but each aware that the time will come when there must be a reckoning.

Another fantastic offering by this author.

I have read a number of Josephine Cox books and from the moment I discovered her I have been a huge fan.

Every single book i've read by this author i've really enjoyed and this one was no acception. This was a great book to help me pass my work day over the last couple of days and it was captivating.

Nell and Kit's relationship was lovely to see blossem and the way everything grew throughout the story was at a good pace. I will always be a fan of her books and it's great to see that Audible seem to be bringing out most of her books now she's unfortunatley passed away. I love Carrol Boyde reading this authors work but i'm also beginning to love sherry banes just as much.

Lillian and vincent morgan were spiteful characters as was slater. I found this book a fantastic read and it still confirms my believe that Josephine Cox is still my favourite writer of these types of books.
