A gripping debut thriller with a killer twist at its core.

When Claire surprises her fiancé, Noah, at work for their anniversary, she’s the one who ends up being shocked to her core …

Because Noah left the company nine months ago, and she had no idea. How can she not have known?

Now he isn’t answering her calls. He won’t respond to her messages. He’s disappeared.

As Claire desperately tries to find her fiancé, her world begins to shatter as the truth about who Noah really is starts to emerge.

And things are about to spiral dangerously out of control . . .

'Clever storytelling against a backdrop of vivid psychological trauma, and a sense of creeping horror as you realise the truth about the plot! Highly recommended.' (Helen Cooper)
'Cuckoo is an outrageous white-knuckle ride that packs one hell of a punch, but as the psychological journey unfolds, the truth is as heart-wrenching as it is shocking. Callie Kazumi is one to watch.' (Alice Slater)

I think the overall story telling was phenomenal but the ending was too much of a big twist to make sense of the build up and then there was a secondary twist at the end making it slightly more confusing. It just made the whole buildup seem a little pointless. Worth a listen but honestly I think the build up could have pointed slightly more obviously in the direction the book was heading as it didn’t seem to fit the overall narrative. T

Gripping story but disappointing ending

A cosy psychological thriller that is easy to unpick. The storyline is about Claire, a social outcast, who has never fitted in, whether at school, work or with friends.
When she meets Noah, he is the answer to all of her dreams, or is he?
With a dominant mother who bullied her during her childhood, Noah is kind and attentive, nurturing Claire through her past torments. But when she discovers she's not his only girlfriend, all hell breaks loose.

I do wish there had been a better twist at the end.

3.75/5

Predictable. But worth reading.

Cuckoo had me completely gripped from the very first page what a phenomenal debut from Callie Kazumi! It all begins when Claire plans a thoughtful anniversary surprise for her fiancé, Noah, only to stumble upon a shocking truth: he hasn’t worked at the place she turns up to in months. That startling discovery is just the tip of the iceberg in a tense, addictive unraveling of secrets, trust, and identity.

Kazumi is an exceptional storyteller. Her writing is sharp yet lyrical, and she has a real talent for setting the scene without ever overwhelming the reader. The pacing is spot on every chapter leaves you hungry for the next, and just when you think you’ve figured things out, she throws in another twist that completely changes the game. The psychological tension simmers throughout, building to a crescendo that’s both satisfying and haunting.

I couldn’t put it down and found myself thinking about the characters long after I’d finished. If you enjoy thrillers that keep you guessing, with complex emotions and a touch of the unexpected, Cuckoo is an absolute must-read. I can’t wait to see what Kazumi delivers next, she’s a standout voice in modern fiction, and one I’ll be following closely.

THIS IS A MUST READ!

I loved this book from the very start until the final word. It moves along at a cracking pace and makes you constantly change where your sympathies lie. Can’t believe this is her first novel. Can’t wait to see where she takes us next.

Don't believe the reviews. It's not great, run of the mill story with unlikeable characters.

Very average
