About this listen

London, 1884. Sidney Grice is restless, having filed his latest case under S, for 'still to be solved', to await further inspiration. His ward, March Middleton, remains determined to uncover the truth.

Geraldine Hockaday was outraged on the murky streets of Limehouse. Yet her attacker is still on the loose. But then a chance encounter brings a new victim to light, and it seems clear March and Grice are on the trail of a serial offender.

Critic reviews

Praise for the author: "What is so refreshing about the Gower Street series is that they are never quite what you expect - these unusual originals stand out in what is a heavily populated genre." ( Crime Review)

I really love this series. I have enjoyed them all, including this one.

The characters are original, flawed but sympathetically wrought and I really like the quirky detail that Kasasian always adds to the narrative. I think this writer is quite special. He completely manages to make the experience of the reader incredibly satisfying without plauging those of us with a weary mind with deep philosophical questions. I think this path requires a great deal of skill and cleverness. Kasasian's clever but he conveys it subtly, unlike his main protagonist, the unintentionally hilarious Sidney Grice. His gin-soaked side-kick, the narrative voice, is also adorable.

The reader, Emma Gregory, does a fine job as she has throughout the series. So, why not five stars? As soon as the prodigal inspector returns offering a happy ending you know where it's going... I don't like to KNOW an ending, I want to suspect.

A trifle predictable.

This book takes us on a dark journey. The tone and story are far darker then the previous books in the series. I just loved it - the narration is wonderful and the writing magnificent. I’m rather sad that this is the last book in this series.

The entire series Highly Recommended

I love this series. Emma Gregory really brings it to life. An excellent performer.
Of all the books though. There are parts of this one that really play on my mind.

Superb performance

I was dubious about listening to this given reviews mentioning levels of violence but have adored the rest in the series, so decided to give it a go.
It was very hard going in places but not unmanageable. I am glad I did listen and shed a tear at the end. Poor March.
A very special author and narrator. Wish this wasn’t the end of the series!

So torn over this one!

Can't wait for the next one. I wish there had been a happy ending for March. Everyone loves a happy ending. Mr Grice is adorable so is Molly. I love all of the Grice books and will definitely listen to them again at some point. As always excellent narration. Hurry up Mr Kasasian when's next one ???

Brilliant

I can understand why some reviews have struggled with the amount of violence in this book. However I believe it fairly reflects the victorian/Edwardian society in London , particularly the conflicts between the classes, poverty and gender.
March Middleton is as both humorous and as endearing as ever and Sidney Grice as erassable . In my opinion this is the best in the series. Thank you Mr Kasasian

Not for the faint hearted

I have loved this series of books and shed a tear towards the end of this one. I shall keep my fingers crossed for another instalment but did feel that this may be the end of the line for Londons foremost personal detectives.

Is this the end of Sidney Grice?

I have loved this series, and in the knowledge that this is the last, hated the ending.
It felt like there was no closure. I would have loved it to wrap up better with the what happened to Sydney Grice & co after the documented investigations.

Hated that March didn't get her happily ever after, and seriously not happy with George Pounds ending.

Felt like the ending was all very rushed. A shame as all books in the series have been great.

As usual Emma Gregory was fantastic!!

Not The Ending I Wanted

As always I loved the book but despaired at the tragedy March endured. So sad
