About this listen

From #1 New York Times bestselling author Nora Roberts comes a trilogy about the land we’re drawn to, the family we learn to cherish, and the people we long to love...

Book One of The Cousins O’Dwyer Trilogy

Dark Witch

With indifferent parents, Iona Sheehan grew up craving devotion and acceptance. From her maternal grandmother, she learned where to find both: a land of lush forests, dazzling lakes, and centuries-old legends.

Ireland. County Mayo, to be exact. Where her ancestors’ blood and magic have flowed through generations - and where her destiny awaits.

Iona arrives in Ireland with nothing but her Nan’s directions, an unfailingly optimistic attitude, and an innate talent with horses. Not far from the luxurious castle where she is spending a week, she finds her cousins, Branna and Connor O’Dwyer. And since family is family, they invite her into their home and their lives. When Iona lands a job at the local stables, she meets the owner, Boyle McGrath. Cowboy, pirate, wild tribal horsemen, he’s three of her biggest fantasy weaknesses all in one big, bold package.

Iona realizes that here she can make a home for herself - and live her life as she wants, even if that means falling head over heels for Boyle. But nothing is as it seems. An ancient evil has wound its way around Iona’s family tree and must be defeated. Family and friends will fight with each other and for each other to keep the promise of hope - and love - alive...

As much as I enjoyed the story, and I did, I unfortunately found it quite hard to listen to. The performance is rather shouty throughout, which makes it unpleasant to hear, especially on headphones.

Not one for headphones

I enjoyed the story (magic and fantasy a great mix) but the narrator was irritating- as a reviewer before said, very excitable and shouty and anyone not the lead character, had an old voice. Iona also sounded in contrast, rather childish. Also the Irish accents were painful. A shame as it did ruin the story a little, although I persevered til the end! If it’s the same narrator in the next 2 books I’ll read them rather than listen.

Great story shame about the narration

set in the beautiful County Mayo Katherine Kellgren transports you back to a time of witch craft and famine where a young witch lives the life of a mother as well as a powerful witch but evil is never far away ... centuries later that evil still lingers when the last part of the puzzle comes to mayo in the form of a cousin. Horses, Hawks, dogs and friendships take this tale from a bit of a slushy love story to a pleasant tale which I really enjoyed. It wasn't a taxing listen and fairly light hearted.

Fantastic modern witchy tale

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

I love Nora Roberts books and enjoy listening to them, however the narrator is apalling. If a book needs an Irish accent then they should get an actor who can read in this form. The narration completlety ruins the book so much so I nearly gave up on it very early on but tried to persevere. This is one book I will be returning as I couldn't bare to finish it never mind want to listen to it again. Such a shame.

What didn’t you like about Katherine Kellgren’s performance?

Nothing it was apalling

Dreadfull Narrator
