About this listen

Countess, Duchess, twice a Queen, ruler of vast lands, crusader, mother and politician, this is the story of the young Eleanor of Aquitaine.

Aquitaine, 1137
The young Eleanor of Aquitaine has inherited the lands of her father, at once becoming most powerful and most vulnerable. Promised without her knowledge to the heir to the King of France, Eleanor is about to enter a court unknown, and a world most violent. Through trials of marriage, politics and crusade to the Holy Lands, Eleanor will travel, rising above the limitations set upon her, to forge a path to a future where dreams of true power are more than mere illusion.

Daughter of the Sun, Story of the Young Eleanor of Aquitaine is part of the Heirs of Anarchy series by G. Lawrence.
Although part of Heirs of Anarchy, this book can be listened to as a stand alone novel.

This novel gives a vivid insight into the daily life and politics for a 12th century girl navigating becoming a woman in a world ruled by men. The narration is engaging, with the narrator taking on the voice of Eleanor of Aquitaine as an elderly world-weary woman, telling her story in retrospect. Some of the editing is odd, leaping unexpectedly into each new chapter, but it doesn’t affect the immersive nature of the novel and the storytelling. I would very much recommend it.

Vivid and engaging

Ms Archer-Woodcock told this story wonderfully! One of the best I've heard. Every intonation, every chuckle, every pause was perfect. At times I could see the places she narrated as if I were there. I listened in the car on the daily commute and this storyteller helped the journeys no end. Great stuff!

Daughter of the Sun is an engaging dive into the life of the young Eleanor of Aquitaine, bringing her remarkable story to life with vivid detail and emotional depth.

Gemma Lawrence captures Eleanor’s transformation from an ambitious young woman to one of history’s most iconic — yet often overlooked — figures. Lawrence’s writing is immersive, blending historical accuracy with an engaging narrative structure.

Lucy Archer Woodcock’s voicing carries the story with authority and authenticity that really elevates the first person narrative. Her ability to convey the complexity of Eleanor’s emotions and reflections on the politics of ambition, achievement (and men!) adds a welcome layer of depth to the story. Her seamless transitions between characters and accents create an engaging listening experience, ensuring that each moment resonates with the listener.

Highly recommended!
