The night before the 2,000 Guineas at Newmarket sees the great and the good of the horse-racing community gathered for a prestigious black-tie Gala dinner. It is a fitting testament to the glamour of the occasion that top chef Max Moreton is cooking the evening's meal.
Founder of the racing town's favourite Michelin-starred restaurant, the Hay Net, Max is something of a celebrity in Newmarket circles. However, spending the night retching in the throes of agony is the last thing Max expects. But much worse is to come ... his food is suspected of putting twenty-four of the dinner guests in hospital. Max's pride and professionalism tells him all is not as it seems.
Within hours, Max's restaurant is forcibly closed, his reputation teeters on the brink of ruin, and a court case looms. But the day is far from over, and soon Max Moreton finds himself desperately fighting for more than just his livelihood ...

A good listen
As Always Tony Brittons narration is excellent as is the story. Dick Francis is one of my favourite authors. Detail and excitement.

Another spoiled by narrator
A great story by Dick Francis but ruined by the narrator. Every character sounds 80 and he seems to have 2 accents only, a plum in the mouth or a cockney equivalent.
I doubt Audible even bothers about reviews but

Slow cooking not worth the wait
Sounds like an interesting scenario, but witten without any depth of insight into the restaurant business, and far far too slow in getting anywhere. Also Tony Britton is far too old to take on this role of a late-20s energetic chef. Gone are the amusing and entertaining characterisations of earlier Francis readings, and instead we're given a very downbeat exhausted rendering. I managed just over 2 hours of it before returning the title. Not recommended.

Poor sound quality
Frequently sounds as though it has been slowed down. Annoying and spoils the experience. What happened to quality control?
