About this listen
In July 2011, the oil tanker Brillante Virtuoso was drifting through the treacherous Gulf of Aden when a crew of pirates attacked and set her ablaze in a devastating explosion. But when David Mockett, a maritime surveyor working for Lloyd's of London, inspected the damaged vessel, he was left with more questions than answers. Soon after his inspection, he was murdered.
Dead in the Water is a shocking expose of the criminal inner-workings of international shipping, an old-world industry at the backbone of our global economy. Through first-hand accounts of those who lived the hijacking—from members of the ship's crew and witnesses to the attacks, to the ex-London detectives turned private investigators seeking to solve Mockett's murder—award-winning reporters Matthew Campbell and Kit Chellel piece together the astounding truth behind one of the most brazen financial frauds in history.

Well documented shipping industry "scandal"
a well written sorry that read like your latest police novel, expect as far as we know, it is real.
Easy going and really interesting for anyone that is willing to look behind the curtain of the shipping industry.

Great story well told.
Tim Bentinck sounds awfully like Michael Burke, and told this story greatly: a story about gangsters clearly all in it together ; I think there was more to the murder than the book touched on, it's possible someone seized on the chance when the right motive presented itself. Definitely worth a listen!

Incredibly interesting story of a world I knew little about - if you enjoy true crime I would highly recommend this book which covers a fascinating case in excellent detail without losing its storytelling pace. Superb

Great story incredibly well told
Thoroughly informative and very entertaining. Excellent narration. The writers shed light on the murky world of shipping and insurance through the story of the Virtuoso.

Good but not great
Good story that was very methodical in its telling. I wish they hadn’t had a British accent narrating an American book - made it quite jarring when Americanisms were used. It could have benefitted from a voice “actor” rather than narrator. All people from the same country had the same voice, all Greek people sounded the same, women’s voices sounded more like a caricature rather than female. Had to speed up to 1.2x to keep the pace up.
