تحكي هذه الرواية قصّة بول كريسي الجراح في قسم الطواريء والذي يرى بعينيه ما يقع في المدينة من أحداث عنيفة، وفي حادثة من هذا النوع، تموت زوجته وتدخل ابنته في غيبوبة بعد الهجوم عليهما في منزلهم بالضواحي، وبسبب تولي الشرطة للعديد من القضايا فوق طاقة عملهم، فيقرر أن يحقق الانتقام بنفسه لمن سولت لهم أنفسهم فعل ذلك بأسرته.
