About this listen
A gripping historical crime debut from an exciting new voice.
‘It’s strange, the way fortune deals her hand.’
The year is 1759, and London is shrouded in a cloak of fear. With the constables at the mercy of highwaymen, it’s a perilous time to work the already dangerous streets of Soho. Lizzie Hardwicke makes her living as a prostitute, somewhat protected from the fray as one of Mrs Farley’s girls. But then one of her wealthy customers is found brutally murdered...and Lizzie was the last person to see him alive.
Constable William Davenport has no hard evidence against Lizzie, but his presence and questions make life increasingly difficult. Desperate to be rid of him and prove her innocence, Lizzie turns amateur detective, determined to find the true killer, whatever the cost.
Yet as the body count rises, Lizzie realises that, just like her, everyone has a secret they will do almost anything to keep buried....

An unlikely partnership between a bow street runner and a prostitute is needed to find a cold blooded murderer. Lizzie is a sharp witted, sassy heroine who has no difficulty in jumping into the fray in order to find justice for her friend. Constable William Davenport plays Watson to her Holmes and comes in handy when some brawn is needed. He's an astute and likeable character. He also has tragedy in his past which instantly evokes sympathy for him. I loved how his friendship with Lizzie developed in this book and I can't wait to see how it evolves as the series progresses.
fantastic new series!!

The story runs at a fabulous pace from start to finish and I was genuinely left still guessing the villain, all the way up until they were revealed!
The author Georgina Clarke, delivers a great murder mystery from a completely new angle and the heroine is without doubt the best “leading lady” I have ever encountered in a book.
I rarely write an actual review and never one this long! Lol but I genuinely can not recommend this book enough!
The cherry on the cake has also to be, the narrator Claire Trusson, who I’ve just listened to for the very first time, she breathed life in to every single character so superbly, that I became totally absorbed into every believable person she voiced.
It’s 3am! And I’m giving up sleep to leap straight into the second book. If it’s anything like this one, I will be gutted when it comes to an end, as so far I can only see two books in the series.
Please, please Ms Clarke, keep writing!! I believe you have created only the beginning of what could be a fabulous series of books to come!!
Guys, just spend that credit now! You will genuinely be chuffed that you did!
Book two....here I come ;-)
Wow! Fabulous book from start to finish!

Absolutely brilliant!

The narrator is alright but has an annoying habit of emphasising conjunctions as a way of hiding the ‘breath break’ - she needs to go back to elocution lessons: emphasise words with MEANING not the ones that merely indicate a link between meaning.
Guff
