About this listen
She couldn't paint to save her life - so someone's given her a lesson by taking it!
Most newcomers don't stay long in remote Lochdubh - usually boredom, dampness and nosy locals drive them out. But it looks as if artist Effie Garrand has come to stay. When Hamish Macbeth calls on her he's amazed to find the woman in residence after a particularly harsh winter.
Unfortunately, Effie is also quite delusional, having convinced herself that fellow local artist Jock Fleming is in love with her, and that they are engaged. But after a lover's scrap with Jock, Effie is found dead, poisoned by hemlock. Suicide or murder? It's up to Hamish to find out whether the dreamer's death is the result of something much more serious than a broken heart....

Another highland headache
once more Hamish Macbeth has a murder to solve the mystery is how they always end up in loch Dubh or Sutherland. M.C Beatons characters are always well thought out with thier mannerisms and traits that give them a comic/ tragic feel. All her stories will make you laugh at some point and the villain is not always easily identified. The boo hiss character of DCI Blair of course always gives good milage even when mishap takes him out of the story. One of the flaws is when the murderer is caught and they end up at Strathbane police station it does seem that the survival rate is quite low ,that should be a story in its self. Still another great listen.

Thoroughly enjoyable
Wonderful narration, by David Monteath delightfully humorous in an understated way. Great for the crime enthusiast, the lover of the Scottish voice and with a need for humour. Always wonderful novels by MC Beaton, story, twists, the characters (thankfully not to many to keep track of too).

Macbeth does it again, great story.
A unique story with a cast of wonderful characters, who are all believable. Any one of the characters could have committed the murder, even one of the Police! Brilliantly narrated.
