Gioacchino Rossini (1792-1868) wuchs in einer Musikerfamilie auf und entdeckte mit zwölf Jahren seine Liebe zum Komponieren. Schon als junger Mann wurde er Leiter der beiden Opernhäuser in Neapel, später Leiter der italienischen Oper in Paris sowie königlicher Hofkomponist. In zwei Jahrzehnten schrieb er 39 Opern! Noch heute ist "Der Barbier von Sevilla" eine seiner beliebtesten. Sie wurde 1816 in Rom uraufgeführt.
