Im Jahre 1212 wollte die Magd eines Bäckers in der Schönlaterngasse zu Wien im Hausbrunnen Wasser schöpfen. Doch wie erschrak sie, als sie im Brunnen etwas Seltsames glitzern sah, das einen grässlichen Gestank von sich gab. Ein Bäckergeselle, der keine Furcht kannte, ließ sich an einem Seil in den Brunnen hinabgleiten, musste aber, da er zu schreien anfing, sofort hinaufgezogen werden. Als der zu Tode erschrockene Geselle wieder zu sich kam, erzählte er, im Brunnen ein grässliches Tier gesehen zu haben, das die Gestalt eines Hahnes mit einem vielzackigen Schuppenschweif, plumpen Füßen und glühenden Augen hatte und auf dem Kopfe ein Krönlein trug.
