About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

'Today I woke up on Earth. And I will fall asleep in space.'

In space the sun rises and sets 16 times a day. You fly over every sea, every mountain and desert, every city and every port. The most ordinary things - eating, sleeping, brushing your teeth or cutting your hair - have to be relearned, until they become familiar again. This is the story of Samantha Cristoforetti's incredible journey to becoming an astronaut and her journey beyond Earth.

Her voyage as an apprentice astronaut began when she was in her early 30s: five years of intense training around the world, from Houston to Japan to the legendary Star City in Russia. Countless hours spent in centrifuges, spaceship simulators and under water for spacewalk practice. Then, one day, a rocket was waiting for her on the launch pad. And after eight minutes of wild ascent, she was on orbit, crunched up with her two crewmates in a tiny spaceship that took them to the International Space Station.

With honesty and warmth, Cristoforetti chronicles the 200 days she spent on the ISS, the joys and challenges of being in an extraordinary place, from the sublime sight of seeing Earth for the first time to more unusual concerns, such as mastering the art of floating. How do you find your bearings when there is no up and down? What is it like to run in weightlessness? And how do you cook in space?

This is an enthralling, inspiring and surprisingly down-to-earth story about what it really takes to pursue your dreams.

Felt like I was tagging along

I love books that are written in such a way that you feel that you are part of the story or tagging along. This is the case with this book - I never realised how much training astronauts undertake before getting the chance to fly into space.

The build-up to that day for Samantha seems never ending, so that by the time I got to the chapter describing the launch, even I felt a sense of relief and simultaneous excitement/nervousness.

Now that I am back on planet Earth I am looking forward to following her next trip into space in 2022, as commander of the ISS.

An excellent story - well narrated !

This was an excellent book - the narration was the correct balance of serious technical discussion and the thoughts of a real person going through a remarkable journey

Technical at times but inspirational

most of the chapters have technical information about the training of an astronaut or the life on board of the space station. I loved her enthusiastic and her optimistic view on all things happening to her . this is perfect as a guide for the wanna be astronaut.

To listen on one breath

Absolutely amazing work, which adds to the incredibly inspirational Samantha an extra badge, she really can do everything, including writing such a captivating book! The way she describes her experiences and her journey to become an astronaut makes you feel like you are walking hand in hand with her, and you can almost smell the Soyuz with her. I loved every minute of it. Thank you Samantha for this beautiful book. My only regret is to have listened to this in English. I will get my Italian copy next time I hit a bookstore.
