About this listen

Through every family run memories that bind it together - despite everything. The Tulls of Baltimore are no exception. Abandoned by her salesman husband, Pearl is left to bring up her three children alone - Cody, a flawed devil; Ezra, a flawed saint; and Jenny, errant and passionate. Now as Pearl lies dying, stiffly encased in her pride and solitude, the past is unlocked and with it, secrets.

A classic novel from one of America's greatest living novelists, now available as an audiobook.

This is one of my favourite books by Ann Tyler. A beautifully performed story about a family who eventually managed to eat at the Homesick Restaurant.

Everything is perfect

The story is very enjoyable and I thoroughly enjoyed the pace and characters.
Suzanne Toren’s narration always draws me in and I always look forward to hearing her read

The Narrator and story is wonderful

Beautiful, astute, brilliant. The narrator's voice is too slow but when sped up it's perfect

Heartbreaking, a must-read

Beautifully narrated - perfect listening, so whimsical, and as always AT captures the whole spectrum of life

Wonderful, my all time favourite author

Characters are gradually unpicked, like getting to know a stranger. Wonderfully written.
Narration is awful. We don’t need voices like we are being read a children’s story. Completely spoils a fantastic novel.

Wonderfully written

Tightly controlled narrative covering the adult life of Pearl and her three children. Typical of Anne Tyler who embroiders the family detail until we have the full picture without anything suddenly breaking the narrative. Very enjoyable.

Classic Anne Tyler

Anne Tyler is my favourite author. This has great observations as you’d expect from her but for me it isn’t my favourite book of hers. It didn’t quite have the magic of say Back When We Were Grownups. Still left me wishing I’d not finished it

Slow start but really enjoyed it!

V impressed with the multiple voices. And a thought provoking story of complex family life. Recommended.

Such a good narrator.

This is a beautifully written tale of family dysfunction and survival. My only criticism is that is over long and the narrative could have been more concise. The narration was very good.

Very good
