Summary
From the best-selling author of Miss Appleby's Academy comes a gritty saga perfect for fans of Dilly Court, Maggie Hope and Nadine Dorries.
Prue's heart beat hard - she had heard of the low seams of the mines of Northwest Durham, and she had always had a fear of being enclosed. This was her job, she told herself; this was what she had wanted. She must do it. So she picked up her bag and followed them to the cage which carried the miners belowground, praying that the man did not die, that she need not produce some miracle....
Determined to practise as a doctor, Prue escapes a loveless marriage to journey far from home and join a surgery in Tow Law. But she soon finds that long hours and limited resources are only the beginning - gaining the townspeople's trust will be her greatest challenge of all.
From the best-selling author of Miss Appleby's Academy comes the story of Prue Stanhope, young woman doctor to the miners of Tow Law, County Durham.

And enjoyable book
I did really enjoy this book and would recommend it for a gentle. It took a couple of chapters before I settled into it, and then I thoroughly enjoyed it and wasn’t able to put it down. There are some interesting plot twists and events to keep the reader on their toes and it was nice to get closer to some historical events. It was fun and humorous in parts, and left me with a heroine to cheer on.
It feels as if the author was trying to fit in every thing that a woman had to endure back then, but in a superficial , Actually that made it gentler to listen to, but historically I don’t think she would’ve been treated quite as nicely as she was. People seem to either be very nice or very not nice, without any nuance. Murders not investigated, fights without police consequence, …
I really didn’t like the last plot twist regarding the child. it was incomplete, hinting at things that were unsavoury but never actually dealing with them. It felt an unnecessary addition to the story. And finally, the strap line on the cover says ‘Will she forever be an outsider?’ But I don’t think there was ever even a hint that she was an outsider from the very beginning!

Delightful!
This is my first Elizabeth Gill book …… and I bought it purely because it was narrated by Anne Dover. I love all things Anne Dover and she can make the periodic table sound wonderful.
This time around however AD had a great book to read …. a truly wonderful and heart warming book! I am not one for long complex reviews … suffice it to say …. The story is great …. The reader is great …. Money well spent!
