About this listen

From the best-selling and award-winning 'master of the spy thriller' comes a collection of riveting short stories.

When a man's wife leaves him under suspicious circumstances, he sets off in search for her, unprepared for the guilty secrets he's about to drag back into the light.

A man is tempted by a luxury apartment with a top-of-the-range kitchen. But there is a heavy price to pay for this glamorous new life.

And a couple with their marriage on the rocks go on a hike through the Derbyshire countryside as another way to avoid their real problems.

Hailed as the master of the modern spy thriller, Mick Herron's skill for tension, humour and memorable twists are captured in his short stories, collected here for the first time.

I thoroughly enjoyed these wonderfully diverse but equally gripping bite-sized nuggets of Mick Herron perfection!

A collection of pure gems!

I have enjoyed all Mick Herron books to date but am sadly underwhelmed by the Dolphin Junction collection. None of the characters had any real depth and there was no real plots to speak of. And the narration.....Hey ho. Roll on the next Slow Horses novel!

Let down by narrators (Sean Barrett excepted)

i devour Mick Herron's books, but never before on audible. The narrator, while suffering blocked sinuces, attacks each syllable with relish and Dick Van Dyke level accents. It all gets in the way of the story.

Narrator gets in the way

I am a huge fan of Mick Herron. The stories in this collection are very enjoyable, however the entire book is let down by the poor narration. It's almost most unbearable and if it had been any other author I would have given up.

The exception of course is Sean Barrett... I would be perfectly content to listen to him reading the phone book.

Truly awful narration... except Sean Barrett!

l have listened to most of Mick's books and have loved every one of them. This was not up to the usual quality of writing, except for the Jackson and Molly story. Or is it that l have become so used to Sean Barrett

Unlike Mick Herron writing style

I'm half way through and the stories have been great - kind of Stephen King style macabre and not what I am used to from Mick Herron but still very compelling.
My complulsion to write a review at this stage is driven solely by the absolutely terrible narration so far! I mean unbearably bad. Currently listening to The Other Half and it's the same female narrator from one of the previous stories, All I can say is I have never in my entire life heard anyone speak with these speech patterns. Imagine putting the inflection of EVERY single word in exactly the wrong place, then you will be half way to understanding how incredibly irritating this is. The other narrators have been only marginally less awful.
I am persevering because it's from one of my all time favourite authors AND because Sean Barrett narrates one of the later stories. If I had not known about Herron's work previously and not listened to the Slough House series there is no way I would have listened beyond the first couple of minutes.

Great Stories But Virtually Unbearable Narration

Mick Herron has a sublime talent. This is a book that is laid out in a perplexing manner for the average Slough House obsessive not to mention the other tales.

Do not be faint hearted, prepare for one of the best reads from MICK Herron Ever! Thank you Mr Herron. Leonie Frieda

Julia Franklin really isn’t to my liking . She ruins Mick Herrons books for me . Obviously she floats other peoples boats.

Poor stories , average performance

I love Mick Herron books but the narration by the female reader was so terrible I had to turn it off and return the book. Truly awful. First time I've ever returned one.

Terrible narration.

I think Mick was having a off day with this set of stories or the publisher's just wanted anything he had hanging about to flog and blagged a few narrators to rush the reading .

average average average and only saved by Sean barrett
