About this listen

One stolen baby. Two desperate strangers. One night of terror.

The USA Today and Sunday Times top 10 best-selling author returns with a dark and twisty psychological thriller.

She saved your life.

When Nina almost dies during a disastrous blind date, her life is saved by a waitress called Angel. But later that evening, Nina is surprised by a knock on the door. It’s Angel - and she’s pointing a gun at her.

Now she’ll make you pay.

Minutes later, Angel’s younger brother, Lucas, turns up, covered in blood, shielding a stolen newborn baby in his arms. Nina is about to endure the longest night of her life - a night that will be filled with terror and lead her to take risks she would never have believed herself capable of....

Critic reviews

Praise for Cass Green: "A gripping page-turner with a twisted ending. Brilliant!" (Psychologies)

"Dark, gripping and totally compelling. A genuine page-turner." (Alex Lake, best-selling author of After Anna)

"A beguiling thriller, beautifully written and suffused with a delicately rising sense of menace which builds to a nerve-shredding climax. Once again Cass Green has written a book which you’ll happily be held captive by." (Eva Dolan)

Good, not great

Started off well then I found it dragged a bit until the last third, which was really good, although did wrap in in her usual “and all is well” style.

Kept me listening.

Very good story. Liked most of the characters but one narrator was a little annoying in his mis-pronunciation. Otherwise gripping read.

Excellent book spoiled by one of the narrators

I loved this story. It had some really nice twists and turns and great characters. Three of the four narrators were brilliant and I really enjoyed listening to them. Unfortunately Anna Bentink who narrates the bulk of this story is completely unsuitable for the role and narrates terribly. It’s difficult to remember that Nina (the central character) is only 45 and mother of a young child. Anna is clearly considerably older than this, and seems to feel the need to adopt an even older voice to play the part. She reads her as if she’s a prim 70 year old, which just doesn’t fit. It makes absolutely no sense and is irritating to the point of spoiling the whole book. The way she reads the voices of other characters is terrible too and completely at odds with the voices of the actors playing those roles. She also has a habit (particularly towards the end of the book) of slowing down and becoming staccato as if she’s tired and has lost all of her energy. It’s a big shame. I really wish that the production companies were more careful when casting. They only have to concentrate on getting a voice that fits the book and an actor who is good enough to narrate in a manner that does justice to the author. It’s no where near as complex as casting a play or film, where many other factors come into play. Why do some narrators continue to get work when they do such a poor job? Please if anyone from the production team is reading this, try a bit harder. It’s frustrating for the listener, really unfair on the author and in the end financially compromising for you!

Twisty Psychological Thriller

This is the second book by Cass Green which I have read, the first being In a Cottage In a Wood which I loved. I was hooked by this one from start, although it did seem a bit far-fetched at times. But then again stranger things have happened, so who knows! I wasn't sure where it was going to go at times, but Ms Green has woven a twisty, mesmerising story and I couldn't stop listening. A very satisfying ending too!

The narration was good and added to my enjoyment of the story.

Disappointed

I found this book quite slow and the story line is unremarkable.....The Woman Next Door & Cottage In the Wood are much better!
