I'm not sure about this book, I had to listen to it twice, it's a great concept, and well presented.
The issue is for me I struggled to follow it, re-listening to certain chapter just make sure I was on the right path.
the narration is spot on, faultless even.
over all I'm quite sure this will appeal to the masses.

Dark dungeon core book

This was one of my delves into the dungeon core after reading quite a few LitRPG books. So I've not got any direct comparison in this sub-genre to compare with but I enjoyed this book.

This was a refreshing change to have this book set in Australia. This gave the book a nice refreshing feel and some nice colloquialism. With Troy Neenan coming from Australia why not use what you are familiar with. I do have a bit of a warning needed as this book can be quite macabre in its actions and descriptions which isn't for everyone. In some places it does get very dark.

This book has two sets of narrative stories. The first follows the dungeon as it researches and sets traps to defend itself and the second story follows David in the ‘real’ world as he tries get back to normality and he gradually realises his connection with the dungeon. Both viewpoints were quite different and I enjoyed following both stories. The dungeon progression was very interesting and had some use of real life items and science (it didn’t follow the usual Goblin, Orcs, Troll route).

There were a few issue but were quite minion as I could overlook them. With the dungeon and main character both being called David it was hard to sometime work out which one we were currently following for a sentence or two until they mention something that makes you realise which one we are now following. Also the author liked to us ‘something happen and then backtracking telling us what previously occured to lead up to the event– Like what TV shows do showing you something weird or out of character and then saying previous 24 hours earlier). A few times when there was a time jump I thought I had missed a chapter or forgot what I listened to the day before.

Travis Baldree did a great job with the narration. He made everything more interest and use a good selection of voices.

I will consider picking up the next one as I would love to see how Troy expands the world.

Fun take on the genre's usual limitations

The manner in which this book deals with the usual issue of the limited range of a dungeon is a fun one, splitting the dungeon and core into two semi-independent entities rather than simply adding an additional supporting character leads to some interesting differences in the mechanics due to their connected nature.

Throughout this book the author seems to enjoy playing around with a number of the tropes of the genre, but it is mostly done with good-natured, but somewhat dark humour that still seems to respect the ideas being mocked, portraying dungeon fairies as malignant creatures seeking to entrap a dungeon core rather than the usual benign helpers being an obvious early one.

The performance of the narrator helps to further enhance this book with a good range of distinctive tones and voices to support a varied cast of characters.

Overall, this was a strong start to the series and I am interested to see how it progresses in the future.

Great read.

Honestly the only reason why it was 4 instead of a 5 for story is that am a very hard person to please. Good over all, a really fun read.

A dungeon core story in Australia

A brash unorthodox main character, not necessarily the nicest of people, but an interesting take on the typical dungeon core story.
My only critic is the narrator on a couple of occasions seems to jump form one scenario to another when a simple 3 second pause would have helped with any confusion.
