About this listen

The lights are out for good....

The Riley family is preparing to start a new life as owners of the River Rock Hotel in Galena, IL, when the lights go out and the world plunges into chaos. Matthew Riley wants to believe that people will come together to overcome the challenge, but as panic sets in after the massive EMP event, he has to face the harsh truth that the only people he can trust are his family.

His ailing father, David, has the skills the Riley family needs to survive in the dark new world, but with no medication for his heart condition on hand, his health is failing. Matthew’s wife, Kathleen, doesn’t share his optimism, but she will do what it takes to keep the family together and defend the hotel from the violent survivors who want to take it for their own.

As resources grow scarcer, family is the only bond that can be counted on. But those bonds are strained and frayed as the tensions of the new world begin to pull them apart. In a broken civilization, the only way to survive is strength in numbers. How can one family and their allies survive when the world has turned upside down?

I have been reading/listening to alot of post apocalyptic audiobooks. I have become a little obsessed:) this one was not bad and not the best I have listened to. A little wordy at times. But the story line with the family and friends, trust, giving empathy to one another and working together as a growing family is beautiful.

Pretty good

It is a luxury to have box sets especially when you can get the audible narration for the set. I very much enjoyed this series and was glad not to have to wait for the next episode to come out!

The family that was the main focus of the series, were all strong and full of ideas and opinions that didn’t always coincide with that of other members of the family. This led to arguments as different family members had different priorities. The arguments were so realistic that they made me feel slightly uncomfortable! Despite these arguments, the family held together because of their love for one another.

It was good to read of an apocalyptic event where there were signs of people from the local area working together in a proactive way, putting their own skills and knowledge at the disposal of others. There were obvious dangers from people in the community who had always been takers rather than givers who were freer to pursue their selfish ends once law and order had broken down.

The audible narration was very good. Matthew E Berry read clearly and at a steady pace. A highly recommended box set.

Realistic Characters with Gripping Storylines

Okay yes like some of the other reviewers I did want to shake Matthew and I struggled a bit with some of the story lines but overall this was a refreshing take on this genre and there were some very interesting characters. I would have liked to have known more about the why but that didn't fit within the story parameters so get it.
The narrator suited the story.
