All murder mysteries follow a simple set of rules. Grant McAllister, an author of crime fiction and professor of mathematics, once sat down and worked them all out.

But that was 30 years ago. Now he's living a life of seclusion on a quiet Mediterranean island - until Julia Hart, a sharp, ambitious editor, knocks on his door. His early work is being republished, and together the two of them must revisit those old stories: an author hiding from his past and an editor keen to understand it.

The narration was excellent and tbe story itself was clever and well written. However the twists within the narrative were not as complex as I had hoped.

This wasn’t what I was expecting at all abs although there were bits I really I enjoyed the overall feeling I was left with was one of being cheated. I can’t explain why as it would be a spoiler. I can say that I felt the author started off with one idea and the half way through changed that decision, which although a valid writing style of some, it just didn’t work here. I also felt in a book that was all about the rules of the who dunnit the author did not play fair with the reader.

I applaud trying to do something different but I just feel it fell flat. If it weren’t for the fact Emilia Fox was the narrator I truly don’t think I would have got to the end which I’m not sure would have been necessarily a bad thing!

I found the whole thing predictable and derivative, which wouldn’t have been so terrible had a cared at all about the main characters.

I would definitely recommend this book to any murder mystery lovers out there. It’s like you get a bunch of stories plus the overarching one, and some twists included. Quite a delight.

This was one of the most dreary books I have listened to. It was a series of unconnected short stories which I kept thinking would all come together eventually. Unfortunately eventually never arrived and I was left wondering what was the point of this book. Emilia Fox did her best to keep the reader interested but if you want a good murder mystery don’t pick up this book.

Well-crafted, well-delivered. Difficult to express my opinion without plot spoiling. I felt my role as reader (listener) was brilliantly honoured and respected by the author, Alex Pavesi, and voiced with such skill by Emilia Fox.

Found it a little bit confusing at the very beginning, then you start to see how the story is developing, then the twist comes. Was totally absorbed by the end. Very good read.

A lovely listen up to about the last two hours. Unfortunately the author then goes off on a bit of a power trip and start adding in details that the reader just doesn’t care about. But still worth a listen.

The book is a series of short stories tying together different forms of the detective genre, with a loose overarching storyline to link them together. Overall, the common thread is tenuous and the short stories necessarily lack depth. Maybe enjoyable for diehard fans of murder mysteries but perhaps give it a miss if you looking for a good story!

I liked the structure and although the individual stories were a little simple it all hung together very well. My only real criticism is that it got a bit too clever for itself at the end. Overall, very enjoyable and Ms Fox does a great job.
