About this listen
President Jack Spiers and former Secret Service agent Ethan Reichenbach throw caution to the wind, committing themselves publicly as the first out male lovers and partners to occupy the White House. Jack moves Ethan into the Residence, but as Ethan settles into his new role as first gentleman of the United States, not everyone is thrilled with their choices. When it seems like the world turns against them, Jack and Ethan must turn to each other, finding the strength together to press on.
In the chaos, Jack's relationship with Russian President Sergey Puchkov grows closer, and the two nations find themselves working almost as allies. But President Puchkov has secrets of his own, secrets that could rip everything apart. And Ethan steps back into the action with Lieutenant Adam Cooper, taking charge of a covert kill team tasked with hunting down General Madigan once and for all.
But Madigan is elusive, and his dangerous reach is long. He strikes at Jack and Ethan from the shadowy corners of the globe, unraveling their entire world. As the mad general draws new allies together, he is single-minded in his quest to destroy the only two men who ever beat him.
Contains mature themes.

High Octane All The Way!!
Yes, that opening chapter nearly killed me and yes, l lost it with the villain and yes, this book was a rousing good time!! l absolutely adored the breath of research, meticulous attention to detail, deep character work, well crafted political speculation and the thrills and spills. The writing is intelligent but I must call out some action sequences that were jump the shark moments and that Jack’s lightness, optimism and positivity did not radiate unless Ethan was with him - yet it was this radiance that first attracted Ethan? Regardless, the speculative politics, military action, futuristic elements, steamy romance and thoughts around sexuality, religion and wealth were so brilliant!! Yes!
🎧 Two characters whose mannerisms were written as polar opposites had an interrogation scene. The emotionless and emotionally charged speaking voices remained rock solid, the rapid back and forth between them seamless and Mr Solo cranked up the tension so that you chewed nails wondering who would break first. This was so well written but lawd, JS’s performance was like reading TV 🎭!!. Shifting gears to accents, Faisal's English and Arabic improved from EOTS but Sasha's Russian remained atrocious. So? Both characters were soft-spoken men of few words who were the quiet strength for Adam and Sergey. And? JS accurately portrayed them as gentle but due to his nuanced delivery, their personality differences remained distinct. It is touches like this that ensure, odd vocal modulation and all, I rate Mr. Solo so highly.

Crazy escapism with HFN
I tried to describe this series to a friend and the best I could think of was The West Wing meets Mission Impossible via Red, White and Royal Blue but with proper adults. Crazy escapism and excellently read by John Solo. Slightly dodgy Russian accents but they're so hard to do and the performance of the characters is so good that it doesn't really matter. Crazy roller coaster ride of a story that gets crazier with every book, with enough bite to avoid the romance between Jack and Ethan becoming stale. Ethan's reactions to the big plot twist in this novel were well drawn. And, oh Sasha, you break my heart.

Great story, mediocre narration...
First to admit that John Solo is not one of my favourite narrators, although I loved his interpretation of Will and Patrick in the series Will & Patrick Wake Up Married. He really irritates the hell out of me sometimes with the silly intonations he uses during recording, so to discover he was narrating this series was a shock; however, I have to admit that overall I was pleasantly surprised by this audio. His inclination to go overboard with his intonations was relatively subdued, and the only real niggles I had were with his Russian accent [pretty awful], his pronunciation of some Russian words such as Mos-cow [heavy emphasis on the cow 😏] and the fact that the ARCTIC [The Arctic is a polar region located at the northernmost part of Earth] has somehow become 'Artic' in his narration. It's not just an one-off deal either; his narration on Enemy Within is exactly the same, so this is me putting up and shutting up 🤐, and coming to terms with the fact that he [and the entire Tantor production team] aren't aware that the word is ARCTIC [heavy emphasis on the middle C 😉].

Whatever next !!!!
This amazing, thrilling story continues from the end of book 1.
It's relentless, the action never ending, and boy, that narration makes the story even more exciting.
You cannot help but be swept away.

Amazing book
Great follow up to the first book in the series. I thought I might lose interest as their relationship was already established, and I usually enjoy books for the delicious relationship build up - but that wasn’t an issue at all. Brilliant relationship plot, exciting action plot and pace, and love the side characters too. I’m relieved to see the next book in the series has already been released as this one leads directly into that.

I enjoyed the story
Excellent story with a good narration. It’s a me thing but I don’t really like the internal monologuing, I find it a bit cringe. However I really loved the action. Book 3 is next for me.
