About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

The gripping thriller from the #1 bestselling author of The Couple Next Door.

Welcome to Stanhope - a safe neighbourhood. A place for families.

William Wooler is a family man, on the surface. But he's been having an affair, an affair that ended horribly this afternoon at a motel up the road. So when he returns to his house, devastated and angry, to find his difficult nine-year-old daughter Ella unexpectedly home from school, William loses his temper.

Hours later, Ella's family declare her missing.

Suddenly Stanhope doesn't feel so safe. And William isn't the only one on his street who's hiding a lie. As witnesses come forward with information that may or may not be true, Ella's neighbours become increasingly unhinged.

Who took Ella Wooler?

Nothing will prepare you for the truth.

The ending was a total disappointment . The narration was very good. Enjoyed it until the last chapter.

The ending was so disappointing. It totally fell flat. Was there a final chapter missing. Ruined the book

Entertaining but far fetched

The story felt quite repetitive in parts and the perspectives/characterisation of some characters didn’t feel realistic. I didn’t feel invested in the outcomes of the various plot lines and many were weakly rounded out. It was entertaining enough though.

First Audio Book

This is the first audiobook I have listened to and I was hooked straight away, I stumbled across the book in a local shop and was intrigued after reading the synopsis, I don’t read much at all so figured I’d try an audio version.
The performance from January LaVoy is great, she really hooked me with her change of tone for each character and how clearly she came across, I found her really interesting to listen to, like my favourite literature teacher back when I was in school. The story was great and kept me guessing the whole way through. I listened to it on journeys to and from work and couldn’t wait to get back in the car each time to listen to it some more. I even didn’t call my parents on one of the journeys as I normally do. Sorry Mum. All in all, great story and even better performance and will definitely listen to another one written by Shari and/or narrated by January, providing I’m as hooked by the synopsis.

Flawed cast of characters, twists, turns etc

Out of all of Shari Lapena’s books I think this is my least favourite however it was a well rounded story with some twists and turns however it was fairly predictable and the twists weren’t too shocking! Like many of her other characters in her other books the ones in this one are nearly all unlikeable as well; they are flawed deeply so and make mistakes some greater than others. Overall a good book.

Good Story...but...

This book was narrated beautifully, and the story was good, but I agree with those who say that the child should have been older. I also agree that none of the characters were particularly likeable.
The ending wasn't rounded out well. Did the journalist get to the truth? Unsatisfactory in that respect.

Felt the ending of the story was a bit abrupt. I like full closure of my reads.
