About this listen
Some truths are dangerous, certain secrets best concealed, and one story never should have been written at all.
Being an unwanted twin in the Imperial line of succession, Farilane became a scholar, adventurer, and in a time when reading was once more forbidden—a book hunter. Her singular obsession is finding the mythical Book of Brin, a tome not just lost but intentionally buried. Respected and beloved by the Teshlor Knights, not even their legendary skills can protect her for what she finds is more dangerous than what she sought.
From the three-time New York Times best-selling author Michael J. Sullivan, Farilane is the second novel in the Rise and Fall trilogy. This latest set of stories sits snugly between Legends of the First Empire and the Riyria books (Revelations and Chronicles). With this tale, Michael continues his tradition of unlikely heroes who must rise to the call when history knocks, demanding to be let in. This series will conclude in the summer of 2023 with the release of Esrahaddon, the final piece in a narrative that began in 2008 and contains 19 full-length novels spread across four series.

Outstanding book
I loved that action and the powerful character of Farilane. It’s so good to have a strong physical and intelligent woman.

really enjoyed it and was very glad I stuck with it as there were a few instances where it fell unnecessarily slow

New character
I don’t always take to a new character right away but I was surprised when I found farilane. Great job and brilliant read. I will definitely be reading it a second time.

Incredible Ending
Honestly, I struggled a bit at the beginning of this, I found the pace a little slow, but as the story developed I just got drawn in more and more. Right up to and through the incredible Ending, to the very last word.

Brilliant! Favorite book so far
I'm still in bits after that ending. I'm 4 trilogies into Michael's work and I simply love the weaving he does between all the characters across all the time lines. It's amazing. He has had so many strong heroines in his stories throughout all the series but this was the first to be recognised by many other characters,... it was bound to end. Women have it tough in Elan. Can't wait for the next book in the series

Honestly? His best book yet.
I am rarely driven to write reviews... but having just finished this book I hust had to write one. The reviews on Audible tend to underwhelm me as many average books hold 4 or 5 star reviews yet this one at present only shows 3 stars... well, I guess I can understand that as the book does not follow one particular convention that some readers may find jarring. Without giving away spoilers... a bad book does not make you care about the characters. A good book does, and I cannot believe that anyone that read this did not get drawn in and develop a love and indeed a hate for the characters involved. Thank you for not making this a simple fairy tale which it would have been if you stuck to conventions. My favourite book of yours so far.

MJS's best work to date
Simply superb. Read it (or even better, listen to it)! For the first time ever, I might just re-listen to this straight away.

A bit too short?
Unlike most reviewers this is my first experience of this author's work and one that on the whole I enjoyed. My only criticism is that not having read the other books the ending and its associated mood shift seemed a little bit abrupt. It may have benefited from being a little longer with a little more foreshadowing.
