Everything has it's time

I don't mind most of the "period" books that I read, but much as I loved the Lew Archer books in the 70s, I do not think they have worn well compared to the average, certainly not based on this one at least - the other recent re-reading was a little better, but not dissimilar. I wouldn't not read and finish but I've not enjoyed them, as I once did, second time around

Standard

Pretty standard 1950s private detective story. Not quite Raymond Chandler but enjoyable enough. The only annoying thing is there’s no gaps between chapters but you get used to it. Obviously you need to be able to ignore the dodgy 50s attitudes about everything…
