The story:

good for imperial fists fans, genestealer cults and deathwatch too....and great narration so very enjoyable

With a surprise appearance in the middle. I love the way they depicted the genesteelers cults but I'm a bit sad that it's always the a few of my favourite chapter characters gets killed. Awesome writing and intense story

The narrator mispronounced a lot of words. The space marines all felt a bit stupid.

Not the best

The story was rather average, I felt. I'd hoped for a more detailed insight into the Sons of Dorn than was presented here. I also found the central character's self doubt to be wearing, at times.

My least favourite aspect of this audio book was the narrator; firstly wholly night begin with 'w' but it shouldn't be voiced. Secondly, the choice of accents for some of the characters was so comedic that I found it distracting. Where's Toby Longworth when you need him?

An okay but not exceptional book

The plot lines are always intricate and exciting, and this is no different. I enjoyed the story and most of the characters. However, it would seem that most of the Space Marine characters are continuously shouting at each other or other people - other characters are more moderated in their emotions. Whilst this may be accurate (Imperial Fists and Space Wolves are not known for being overly calm by all accounts) it becomes a little tough on the ears when every conversation seems to end in shouting, requiring a turning of the volume down.

Narrator does well to show case different characters and inject some variety where he can - I just feel the script forces him to be loud too much of the time

This book while well written and delivered is an example of what happens when you have a dozen authors writing stories simultaneously.

The imperial fist arrive on a world that they suspect of heresy, the looming threat of a hive fleet incoming. If this is your first book in this setting like the author and you only context then this is adequate for a setup. For everyone else however, including the character in the story as it has ben 200 years since Tyrranids entered the setting, this alone tells you that there is a Genestealer Infestation active on the world.

For context: That means everyone in powers must be subjected to genetic tests for determine whether they are even human and not some xenos insect thing pretending to be.

And as we have already said the author doesn't know this. The story follows standard beats but all of them stem from this fundamental misunderstanding of the source material. These are primaris marines they should know damn well what a Genestealer Cult is and considering how the previous garrison was lost without warning, (this is the prologue so no spoiler), They should know that the territory is hostile in some way.

Authors need to stop acting like the characters in the stories are encountering new situations. The practises of a Genestealer Cult are known and itemised at this point. Mining guild/family fully usurped, PDF forces infested first by squads and them upwards until command is usurped, planetary council is infiltrated and if possible planetary governor is usurped too.

200 years of space marine chapters and inquisitors taking back worlds has formed this playbook and the Genestealer Cult here dotted every i and crossed every t.

The problem with having new authors

Story is fine but some small issues spoil the enjoyment, mostly the narration. The narrator seems to be shouting most of the time and mispronounces some odd words that spoil the rhythm.

An enjoyable listen and it’s nice to see the cult get some time as the enemy but it’s not up there with the best black library fiction.

I love having these on at work, my enjoyment is only increased by the intensity of the narration. a fantastic book by a great author, beautifully read.

A book finally based on my little yellow boys the Imperial Fists. With the Fists taking on those pesky Genestealer Cults, it was always going to be a good book with plenty of action.
My only grumble is (and it’s very nerdy) The Imperial Fists are known to be one of the Chapters most known for (some would say boring) planning operations. Yet in the book they stumble into ambush and trap after ambush and trap.
Other than that definitely worth a listen if you like the boys in yellow or the sneaky cults
