About this listen

Top-notch suspense and "killer" comedy merge in this rollicking national best seller filled with funky characters, resounding dialogue, and inappropriately named "wise" guys. In the grand tradition of Elmore Leonard, Laurence Shames creates an outrageous heavyweight thriller that’s heavy on atmosphere and action. Joey Goldman is a low-level New York hustler. He’s taking a working vacation in South Florida and looking to score big with a time-share scam. His half brother Gino Delgatto is a man in need of a fall guy. When they meet in Key West, the term dysfunctional family takes on a new meaning. Will one of them succeed? Or will the Miami mob find an eye-popping way to dispose of them both?

Critically acclaimed narrator Richard Ferrone brings every character to life - from bad guys in shiny blue suits to Steve the naked landlord - with a crackling intensity you will love.

I'm new to this author and loved the book. Light, very easy listening, great humour and underneath it some interesting characters and dilemmas. The writing style is wonderful, especially the many fabulous similes, eg {not an exact quote but near enough]: "his eyes were as pale as hospital walls".

Very funny, beautifully written, great narration

Really enjoyable book, good characters, engrossing storyline. Brilliant what’s available for free on audible. Will surely be reading more from the author

I had already read the book so I already knew it was great fun, well written with a good story, enjoyable characters and a great evocation of Key West. However I have to say that the performance in this audiobook really added another level. Highly recommended.

Very enjoyable

but I really took to the water & loved the characters so well rounded....Of course I will try more

I started lilstenig to these because I like Carl Hiaasen. The Key West Capers books are less manic than Hiaasen but very enjoyable and entertaining.. I'm on book three and I have totally warmed to Laurence Shames. These are good humoured books with engaging stories and well drawn characters. I have also noticed that there are some really quite clever insights into life, relationships, and society. This first one sets a lot of the scene but it keeps moving along at a nice pace and introduces you to characters you will meet in later books so the investment pays off. The clash of lifestyles is brilliantly observed. Having bisited Florida many years ago and only knowing it as a tourist I was delighted with some of the inside skinny Shames provides on the local attitude. If you want a read to make you smile in these dark times and to take your mind off your troubles, these will do nicely.

I gave the story four stars because the stores do get better in later books and I wanted to leave myslef somewher to go with reviews :)

Oh and of course if you are an audible veteran you already know that Richard Ferrone is aces as a narrator.

Easygoing with an entertaiining vibe
