About this listen

The new novel from best-selling author Graham Norton

In his tense and darkly comic new novel, Norton casts a light on the relationship between mothers and daughters, and truth and self-preservation with unnerving effect.

Carol is a divorced teacher living in a small town in Ireland, her only son now grown. A second chance at love brings her unexpected connection and belonging. The new relationship sparks local speculation: what does a woman like her see in a man like that? What happened to his wife who abandoned them all those years ago? But the gossip only serves to bring the couple closer.

When Declan becomes ill, things start to fall apart. His children are untrusting and cruel, and Carol is forced to leave their beloved home with its worn oak floors and elegant features and move back in with her parents.

Carol's mother is determined to get to the bottom of things; she won't see her daughter suffer in this way. It seems there are secrets in Declan's past, strange rumours that were never confronted, and suddenly the house they shared takes on a more sinister significance.

Fulfilled expectations

I've loved all Graham's book and this one didn't disappoint. Might not be his best but full of humour and intrigue nonetheless

Mr Norton does it again

Another fab book by Graham Norton. An easy listen, especially as the author himself narrates it. Strong female characters are his hallmark.

Absolutely gutted it’s finished

I have loved all of Graham’s books and this one was no exception. The Irish sense of family and home within his books are so heartfelt and this was as expected. Off the bat, I always struggle with multiple characters being introduced so quickly but it didn’t take long to decipher and get to grips with the story. The twists were unexpected and I often audibly laughed. Graham describes people and places so well that I can picture them so vividly and his narration only emphasises them. Excellent performance and loved his voices for characters.
I’m sad that I read this so fast and i progressively mourned as I could see the time ticking away.
Looking forward to another novel by Graham Norton soon.

Entertaining story

This is the first book I have listened to by Graham Norton and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Graham's narration was nicely paced and I laughed out loud in parts. There are some pretty flawed characters, as there are in life, and some pretty dark humour. The plot kept me engaged from start to finish.

Another brilliant dark comedy from Graham

This has all the hallmarks of Graham's brilliant story telling. He writes real fully rounded characters and there's no big bad wolves everyone is complex

Fabulous!

I hadn’t read the blurb, so hadn’t a clue where the story was going. I wasn’t disappointed. Wonderful characters, and scenes really well described. I think this is definitely his best, and so well read by Graham himself. Moira is the perfect Irish mammy!
