I 1940 er Frankrig på vej til at blive besat af Tyskland. Den 13-årige dreng Louis bor i Pais med sine forældre, men da faren bliver indkaldt til krigen, beslutter hans danskfødte mor sig for, at de må ud af byen, før nazisterne melder deres ankomst. Den jødiske gøgler Maurice, som Louis knytter sig til, er ikke et helt ufarligt bekendtskab. Den danske forfatter Brita Hartz (1912-2010) skrev en lang række anmelderroste bøger, som både retter sig mod børn, unge og voksne. Hendes fortællinger foregår ofte i fortiden, både i Danmark og ude i den store verden, og er inspireret af historiske begivenheder.
