About this listen

Sam Bagshott, son of the late Boko Bagshott, had been at Blandings Castle only a short while, but long enough to know that anyone enjoying its hospitality must get the occasional shock. Sam braced himself as the possibilities flitted through his mind. The house was on fire? Empress of Blandings had taken to the bottle again?

Constable Evans had arrived with a search warrant? There was a wide area of speculation, and he was prepared for bad news in any form. In any form, that is to say, except the one in which it came.

"Jeremy Sinden gives a wonderful performance." ( AudioFile)

It's P. G. Wodehouse, so it's hilarious and beautifully written. At first, I was a smidge disappointed that the book wasn't narrated by Jonathan Cecil. Jeremy Sinden, however, does a wonderful job and the narration is delightful!

Delightful!

Thoroughly enjoyable Wodehouse, as always. However, no narrator is as good as Jonathan Cecil, in my view - he’s the only one with a proper old-fashioned upper class accent: ‘girl’ should be pronounced ‘gel’ and ‘off’ should be ‘orf’ - only Cecil does this naturally!

Thoroughly enjoyable Wodehouse, as always.

The Blandings books are my favourites of all the P.G. novels and this is a strong contender for being Best of Blandings (though the one with Psmith runs it close). All the expected twists and turns, meandering to a happy outcome with a marauding aunt defused (hardly a spoiler - we wouldn't want them any other way). I wondered at times if there wasn't a slightly cruel edge, what with Beach briefly losing his prize watch and Clarence not quite meeting his hero (though maybe he did, after we'd left with all the other Thursday invaders) - but I'm sure these small storm clouds were quickly forgotten and forgiven by the victims.

My only slight quibble with the reading was the similarity of the voices of Gally and Lord Emsworth, so that in conversations between the two, it sometimes became quite difficult to tell where one finished and the other started. It was also taken at quite a gallop, with some true Wodehouse gems being almost mislaid. But it's still a laugh-out-loud production.

Awesome. Can listen again and again, and they're still funny. The narrator is good, and you can picture it all perfectly.

What can you say about Wodehouse?

Initially I thought this wasn’t up to PG W’s usual standard but how wrong I was. Lots of twists and turns. Well worth a listen especially if you get it as part of a deal.

Very funny

My reading tastes have expanded since joining Audible and when my Dad suggested I try out some more PG Woodehouse I needed little persuasion. This is gentle story of country and city folk whose lives entwine and twist in the most delicious manner. I am seeing Gally in a whole new light having read this book and see him for the master that he is. The Empress took rather a back seat but that was fine as it allowed some rather more interesting characters to flow into my brain. Delightfully proper, cordially carefree and a lovely little read. I will certainly be looking for another very soon.
The reading was nice and although you can tell when the narrator takes a break now and then, this by no means spoils things.
So pop on your tweeds, polish the old monicle and prepare for the folk at Blanding Castle to sooth away the modern world.

What Ho! This is a goodie

Laughed out loud at this witty farce. One of his best and very well read. Highly recommended.
