About this listen

For more than 20 years, the most intense and prolonged gang war in British history raged on the streets of Manchester. Warring factions left at least 40 dead and made headlines across the world. This best-selling account tells how vicious battles for control of drugs, turf, and protection rackets blighted the reputation of one of Europe's most dynamic cities and saw the coining of the sinister epithet "Gunchester".

By acclaimed investigative author Peter Walsh, Gang War is a powerful and disturbing account of an extraordinary crime phenomenon.

As a manc I really enjoyed this book
I was born in South Manchester where a lot of this book relates to.It laid bare the gang situation in the city in a clear way and the fact it was made this an excellent read.

Well read and fascinating story of the gangs over a few decades… the Noonans and one punch Doyle and Paul Massey. Even white Tony. If you heard the stories this puts it all into a well encapsulated and riveting tale.

Brilliant story of Manchester gangs in the 90s and 2000s

The overall story is quite good but why the narrator feels the need to put on stupid voices when he's quoting someone I don't know!

Not too bad a listen!

I have read this book and thought the audio version would be worth a listen. It isn’t. In fact it ruins an excellent book. Why does Graham Mack the narrator think every verbal exchange has to be in a faux high pitched Manchester accent? Every comment sounds as outraged and surprised as if members of the GMP had burst into your bathroom whilst you were on the toilet. Became too irritating after the first 8 chapters.

Awful narration. Whiny and startled.

I found his fascinating. A real insight into the gang culture and a shocking realisation of the deaths and the people involved
My only criticism was the sometimes child like grammar and use of direct speech …. “…..” said the DCI
“……” she said. Got quite frustrating and distracted from the excellent story
The narration became a bit melodramatic and fake accented at times, again just a criticism of the audio version.

Fantastic story but challenging story telling

I never knew how badly entrenched Manchester was in gang culture until I listened to this. Fascinating journey through the decades, trying to decipher and answer the one truly unanswerable question..? What is it that makes gang life so appealing..?
Highly recommended. (The book, not gang life…)

What a great listen..!
