About this listen

Random House presents the audiobook edition of Gardens Of The Moon: (Malazan Book Of The Fallen 1) by Steven Erikson, read by Ralph Lister.

Bled dry by interminable warfare, infighting and bloody confrontations with Lord Anomander Rake and his Tiste Andii, the vast, sprawling Malazan empire simmers with discontent.
Even its imperial legions yearn for some respite. For Sergeant Whiskeyjack and his Bridgeburners and for Tattersail, sole surviving sorceress of the Second Legion, the aftermath of the siege of Pale should have been a time to mourn the dead. But Darujhistan, last of the Free Cities of Genabackis, still holds out - and Empress Lasseen's ambition knows no bounds.
However, it seems the empire is not alone in this great game. Sinister forces gather as the gods themselves prepare to play their hand...

Conceived and written on an epic scale, Gardens of the Moon is a breathtaking achievement - a novel in which grand design, a dark and complex mythology, wild and wayward magic and a host of enduring characters combine with thrilling, powerful storytelling to resounding effect. Acclaimed by writers, critics and readers alike, here is the opening chapter in what has been hailed a landmark of epic fantasy: the awesome 'The Malazan Book of the Fallen'.

Critic reviews

Erikson is an extrodinary writer...treat yourself to Gardens of the Moon (STEPHEN R. DONALDSON)
Complex, challenging...Erikson's strengths are his grown-up characters and his ability to create a world every bit as intricate and messy as our own (J.V. JONES)
There's nothing safe about fantasy like this: intriguing, complex, thought provoking, exceedingly well-written, and, for the intelligent reader, exhilaratingly satisfying (PAULA GURAN)

The world building

not the easiest book to start with. The timeline can be brutal sometimes...but for the fantasy genre lovers...its like as vast as it gets.

one recommendation is to download the map and look at it as you listen...it makes the story so much more interesting

Like No other 1-10 statement (No Spoilers)

After nearly one year of listening to the book of the fallen series I feel gutted to have finished it. It has taken me on an adventure like no other and to say Steven has created one of the most complicated story's ever would be fair. This series' depth and history is extensive without any introduction. The magic, religions, characters and even the storyline can sometimes be hard to see in the early stages of most books. If you persevere and persist it is just breathtakingly vast and brilliant. I still can't quite believe how such a complex story can leave one feeling so content with the ending (of the series).

I found the Gardens of the Moon (GotM) the hardest to complete simply because Steven throws everything at you so quickly without explanation for most of it. If I ever do a second read I will get so much more from GotM.
From then on it all gets a little easier, only a little. As a side note the narrating of the first 3 books I found harder to listen than Page who completes it but that is preference.

Now that I have completed this series I don't think any other series will ever leave me confused asking; 'who is that again' or 'where is this storyline going'.

This is not everyone's cup of tea and I feel most people will quit halfway into book 1 but once you're hooked it has you.
It's like no other, I loved it and will hold a place in my heart.

Fascinating world and great characters.

A really compelling, if grim, fantasy world. I had a tough time following the story, however, and really had to work at it. Might continue the series in the future.

messy plot towards the end.

Plenty of good characters, although we follow many that have very little to do with the plot. Towards the end a bunch of new characters appear from nowhere to create final battles, or resolve final battles.

Best to have read the books first

TL/DR: one for the fans and/or someone committed to the whole series.

listening to this was like meeting up with old friends again. If you like fantasy I'd recommended reading the books- Of all the series I've read I'd say this is one where you keep wanting to flip back to look at the map or check something in the appendix, there's so many characters and the world is vast. If you've read the books though, especially a while ago, it's great listenting to this! I feel like this first book is really just a long primer to the whole series so as a standalone it's good but not great- most of the key antagonists (of the series) only have small parts or are barely alluded to in this first novel. I can imagine feeling a bit lost just listening to this cold, and the way the antagonists get dealt with in this novel feels a bit dissapointing (however, go on to read/listen to the whole series and the threads within threads will become apparent).
