About this listen
At its core, gaslighting is a deliberate and repeated attempt to distort the truth in an effort to erode the victim's confidence in their own judgment. Examples of manipulation that may be used to support the gaslighter's tale include trivializing sentiments, rejecting facts, or changing facts to support the deception. It is common for victims to feel confused, anxious, and the desire to justify their interactions with the manipulator. Gaslighting is particularly harmful since it erodes victims' self-esteem and disconnects them from alternative support systems. Those who are gaslighted may eventually suffer from anxiety, depression, and traumatic responses. People need to be able to recognize the warning signs of gaslighting in order to protect their mental health and regain their sense of reality.
