About this listen

Get By in Japanese is devised specifically for travellers. The 70-minute download will help you to get to grips with the basics of spoken Japanese, and introduces the most relevant language you'll hear when you're there. Listen to the audio a couple of times to practise the key phrases and vocabulary, and familiarise yourself with Japanese pronunciation.

There are seven sections, covering essential topics such as:

  • Bare Necessities - greetings, talking about yourself, asking for things, numbers, changing money
  • Getting Around - asking for directions, buying petrol, travelling by bus and train
  • Somewhere to Stay - finding somewhere to stay, asking about facilities, checking in, asking for help, checking out
  • Buying Things - buying groceries, buying clothes, colours, at the department store, at the post office
  • Eating Out - finding somewhere to eat, asking about the menu, ordering, discussing special requirements, complaining, paying the bill
  • Entertainment - finding out what's on, getting more information, buying tickets
  • Emergencies - getting help, explaining problems to a doctor or a dentist, at the chemist's, at the police station

The English narrator and two native Japanese speakers introduce the key phrases and vocabulary. In each section there are a couple of short dialogues where you can check out the language you have heard, with questions to focus your listening. At the end of each section there is the opportunity to practise what you've learned in a guided dialogue "as if you were there".

This download comes with a free booklet, which gives the key phrases and dialogues as they appear on the audio.

PLEASE NOTE: When you purchase this title, the accompanying PDF will be available in your Audible Library along with the audio.

An accompanying book to Get By in Japanese is also available. The 160-page book is perfect as a phrase book and a handy language reference guide. With its tourist and travel tips, thousands of essential phrases and words and a mini dictionary, you'll never find yourself lost for the right word. Imitated pronunciation techniques make it easy for you to quickly say what you see, and the comprehensive menu-reader will make sure you always get exactly what you expect to eat. You can try out what you've learned with mini role plays and activities. To find out more go to www.bbcactive.com/languages
