Summary

In the dead of night, a decrepit, unmarked motor yacht drifts into the medieval port of Vernazza, Italy.

The run-down vessel forms a jarring contrast to the pastel colored tower homes and terraced vineyards surrounding the natural harbor along the coast of Cinque Terra.

Less than 50 yards away, a man wakes up on board a small rowboat, covered in blood.

Lying next to him is a woman with two - execution style - bullet holes to her forehead.

In his right hand he holds a small suitcase. Tucked into his pocket is a Russian built Makarov semiautomatic handgun with two rounds missing.

The man asks himself one question: Who am I?

Who the h*'ll were those people?

A man wakes up with no idea of who he was, where he had come from, or why he was in a boat with a dead woman. But he had a small suitcase and a Russian handgun...

This, the 17th Sam Reilly adventure thriller can be read as a standalone but is better if read in sequence as the characters are built upon from the beginning. And every book has terrific characters. This time, Sam has to struggle not only to survive but to find himself, not knowing who he can trust. David Gilmore continues to narrate: he has become Sam Reilly, his slightly gruff voice perfectly attuned to the nature of these stories, and he gives separate voice to all of the protagonists as well as conveying emotion to the text.

My thanks to the rights holder of Ghost Ship who, at my request, freely gifted me with a complimentary copy. It's a fast action thriller adventure, visual and immaginative, and recommended to all who enjoy the genre.

Ghost Ship

This is my first book by this author and narrator, and I think they are a perfect combination together. From the moment the story starts its action packed and when you get to meet Sam, you just know he's in trouble. With this being my first book in the series, I had no idea if Sam had anyone he could trust to get him out of the mess he had woken up in. But as with any good book like this the bad guys slowly emerge. The narration was spot on and it totally felt like Sam was telling the story.

Great and yet again varied - always wanting more!

I really want to start this review with a spoiler. But I hate that so I'm stopping myself. I loved the start. I told myself I knew what was going on. I loved the way the story moved. I really tried to guess one of the questions in the book but didn't. It made me like it more. This one is very Jason Bourne ish. I loved it for it. I like the books anyway but this was cool.

I'd love to be so well trained/skilled that I could pull off the thinking and actions that Sam does. I think he could based on everything we have seen so far. I also really like the way his friends have got his back because as we have seen in this series. He is always there for them.

Another great book!!

Fantastic!

Ghost Ship by Christopher Cartwright is a standalone listen and part of a series. This book has non-stop action, vivid imagery, twists and turns, plus a great storyline. The character of Sam Reilly is endearing, captivating, and resourceful. I love how the author meshes history with fiction, uses real places for the background, and keeps me riveted to the book. The descriptions of St. Petersburg brought back memories from being there. I so enjoyed this book and thought David Gilmore was perfect bringing the characters to life with his voice. He inflects the right emotions and gives the characters distinguishable voices, so one knows exactly who is speaking. I requested this book and have voluntarily written this review. I will definitely listen to more books by this author and narrator. I can't wait to listen to Sam's next adventure in Brazil looking for El Dorado.

Edge of the Seat Thriller.

This is my first Sam Reilly novel and certainly will not be my last. The action is non stop from the opening paragraph to the closing one. I spent a wonderful day listening to the excellently written and narrated thriller, it really was unputdownable. We are whisked from Italy to Russia to the Netherlands via foot, sea, train and plane. Sam Reilly is a very likeable but occasionally fallible character creating huge empathy between him and the listener.

Great writing and narration

This book was so gripping I had to finish it within 24 hours. It was a well written story and well thought out plot with lots of twists. The narration was really good too. I enjoyed the narrators smooth, rich voice. I’d like to hear more read by him.

A non stop adventure.

This was my first Sam Riley book, a bit late to the party! It really was an interesting story told in a fast, dashing way. Although I was just meeting the characters for the first time and they had been through countless adventures before, it was ok as a stand-alone book. I’m sure there was a lot of history I didn’t know ,but it didn’t spoil the story. It was a real “James Bond, Type” of action thriller with the twist at the beginning. Suspension of disbelief is required when reading this genre. Do that and you’ll enjoy Ghost Ship.

loved it, very exciting

I have read other Sam Reilly books and enjoyed them all but this was slightly different from the beginning. it had all the usual good bits but with an extra level of story which makes it one of my favourites... well done.

As usual the narrator was excellent, always happy to listen to more from him.
