About this listen

From much-loved documentary maker Louis Theroux comes a funny, heartfelt and entertaining account of his life and weird times in TV.

The audio edition is read by the author and contains an exclusive additional chapter.

The Sunday Times Bestseller.

In 1994 fledgling journalist Louis Theroux was given a one-off gig on Michael Moore’s TV Nation, presenting a segment on apocalyptic religious sects. Gawky, socially awkward and totally unqualified, his first reaction to this exciting opportunity was panic. But he’d always been drawn to off-beat characters, so maybe his enthusiasm would carry the day. Or, you know, maybe it wouldn’t . . .

In Gotta Get Theroux This, Louis takes the reader on a joyous journey from his anxiety-prone childhood to his unexpectedly successful career. Nervously accepting the BBC’s offer of his own series, he went on to create an award-winning documentary style that has seen him immersed in the weird worlds of paranoid US militias and secretive pro-wrestlers, get under the skin of celebrities like Max Clifford and Chris Eubank and tackle gang culture in San Quentin prison, all the time wondering whether the same qualities that make him good at documentaries might also make him bad at life.

As Louis woos his beautiful wife Nancy and learns how to be a father, he also dares to take on the powerful Church of Scientology. Just as challenging is the revelation that one of his old subjects, Jimmy Savile, was a secret sexual predator, prompting him to question our understanding of how evil takes place. Filled with wry observation and self-deprecating humour, this is Louis at his most insightful and honest best.

A must read/listen

Excellent content and story of louis' work, career and personal life. Although I have watched the majority of Louis' documentries, I found myself going back to and watching a fresh some as I made my way through the book for more context.

Wonderful.

I theroux'ly enjoyed this booked. Louis talks about relationships, his earlier career, and all the joys of Jimmy Saville. I would highly recommend it. It's funny light-hearted yet really interesting, and provides some great insight into his life.

It very good but

I really enjoyed this book but is was disappointed that it didn't really cover Westbro Baptist church I think that it was a very important part of Louis documentary programmes and some of his best work that it needed to be in there

When Louis met Jimmy and other stories

It's a bit heavy on the Jimmy content...I'd have liked the balance tipped more towards other parts of Louis' career, but overall, a really good book. A must for any Louis fans out there.

Saville Heavy

All in all, this was brilliant and it’s definitely worth purchasing. It’s worth noting that it is very heavy on Jimmy Saville content though. Louis has met so many interesting people - I personally would have preferred to have heard more about them and the behind the scenes of how many wonderful documentaries. Having said that, it’s clear Saville made an enormous impact on Louis and he was very effected by the scandal. So I understand why for this reason it appeared so much in the book. Worth a listen - and I’m excited to rewatch his documentaries now!

Thoughtful and genuine

I very much enjoyed this. Louis does a great job of putting us in his shoes, feeling what he felt. This was perhaps most so in his description of the birth of his first child, which was raw and brutally honest. This sudden and powerful change in his life was reflected by a sudden change of pace and almost surreal and dissociated style of description.

His use of words and metaphor is brilliant and often hilarious. The gag in the section on Ann Widdecombe caught me totally off-guard and I cracked up loudly in a busy gym.

Excellent read overall (with one caveat)

Overall, this is an excellent and entertaining book, and shows a vulnerable side to Louis Theroux. His narration of the text was also very engaging. My only issue was that while of course there had to be some Jimmy Saville in there, it was a touch too much for me (I had to skip over the 'Jimmy revisited' chapter and also the 'bonus' one at the very end of the audio book. But, it's easy to skip to the next chapter and overall, I would recommend this book.
