James Herbert was one of Britain’s greatest popular novelists and our #1 best-selling writer of chiller fiction. Widely imitated and hugely influential, he wrote 23 novels which have collectively sold over 54 million copies worldwide and been translated into 34 languages. Born in London in the forties, James Herbert was art director of an advertising agency before turning to writing fiction in 1975.
His first novel, The Rats, was an instant bestseller and is now recognised as a classic of popular contemporary fiction. Herbert went on to publish a new top ten best-seller every year until 1988. He wrote six more bestselling novels in the 1990s and three more since: Once, Nobody True and The Secret of Crickley Hall. Herbert died in March 2013 at the age of 69.

Haunted house tale
I used to love James Herbert when I was in my late teens/early twenties (about 40 years ago!) but hadn't read this one, but I do love a haunted house story.
Sceptical paranormal investigator David Ash is an interesting character, not really very likeable. The story itself is entertaining, though not particularly unique and did feel quite dated (originally written in the 80s) but it was quite chilling at times.
Steven Pacey does a good job with the narration.

Excellent ghost story
A very good story that keeps rewarding the reader in its typical dark journey to the end. There's moments of excellence and moments that have dated badly, generally this is a very strong story.

loved it
Would you consider the audio edition of Haunted to be better than the print version?
yes, i was able to relax and listen to it in the bath or in bed it was great

the way the brothers and sisters ended up being the bad ones i didnt expect it

Enjoyable
This is a clever book that develops in ways one may or may not see coming. I didn't, and I found the way things played out to be thoroughly absorbing. Very good narration, too.

Quite good, but some issues
I enjoyed this story, but there were some parts of it that did not make sense.
The scene with the clairvoyant in the theatre was a little muddled. I wasn’t sure who was saying what dialogue at one point.
Also, although the narrator, and indeed the author, were English, American words were used throughout (eg drapes for curtains) etc which was just odd. Also WHY is the word ‘grimace’ constantly pronounced as ‘GRIM-ACE’ instead of ‘GRIM-ISS’. ?? That was very silly.
But well worth a listen nonetheless.
