About this listen

From New York Times best-selling legend Mary Balogh - the beloved author of Longing, Silent Melody, and Beyond the Sunrise - comes a ravishing novel of passion and duty, love, and menace....

Life has taught Lucas Kendrick, duke of Harndon, that a heart is a decided liability. Betrayed by his elder brother, rejected by his fiancée, banished by his father, and shunned by his mother, Luke fled to Paris, where he became the most sought-after bachelor in fashionable society. Ten years later fate has brought him back home to England as head of the family who rejected him. Unwilling as he is to be involved with them, he must assume responsibility for his younger siblings, the family estate he once loved - and the succession. He faces the prospect of marrying with the greatest reluctance - until he sees beguiling Lady Anna Marlowe across a ballroom one night.

Anna, far from being the bright-eyed innocent Luke takes her for, is no more a stranger to the shadows of a painful past than he is. But for her, marriage cannot so easily solve what is wrong in her life - not when a tormentor stalks her to the very doors of Bowden Abbey, where Luke and Anna must learn to trust in each other or risk any chance they may have for a happy future.

A story full of twists, turns, mystery, intrigue and of course love. Quite simply wonderful. What a marvellous writer . This is the 7th book I’ve listened to by Mrs Ballogh and they’ve all been excellent and beautifully narrated. Highly recommended!

A Thrilling Tale

The book is soo long I began to despair. I kept listening though as I wanted to understand
Then it ends so suddenly. Left with so many questions.

The end waa so abrupt

First time to listen to one of her books, it was very complicated and there was a mystery and thriller element. Couldn't stop listening until I had gotten to the reveal near the end. A little bit of a stressful listening to be honest haha but with some nice endearing moments. The narrator was good at introducing tension into the narrative however not much vocal differentiation between the characters.

Very much a mystery/thriller

This is my second book by the author and I have enjoyed both. Found the narrator’s male voices odd for the most part, but you get used to it. Will maybe try another by Mary Balogh

Good plot with twist

An excellent story, full of intrigue and romance. 2 people in love at first sight, but have secrets that threaten that love. Well told and a highly recommend read.

Fantastic

Narration was good, story line was slow and predictable, even so I Really enjoyed the performance and the story itself lots of twists and turns but unfortunately didn't jeep you guessing.

Love with a twist

the malevolent / nasty character spoilt a good story as he was too intimidating and ruined what was otherwise a good story.

too horrible a back drop to the story, not conductive to relaxing

disliked repetition, as if publisher said "200 more pages, even if it means repeating over and over what they are feeling, did feel and will feel"

good narration and story

THE STORY , THE PERFORMANCE, THE WHOLE EXPERIENCE is a JOY ... WHEN YOU LIKE PERIOD DRAMA ...

BBRILLIANT ...

This is one of my least favourite books by Mary Balogh, which is a shame as I really like the time period and the hero Luke as well as many of the side characters.

The villain plot dragged interminably and made the story dreary as well as implausible. I would have dispensed with it altogether and just kept the Henrietta plot friction.

It was very frustrating that Anna did not confide in her husband, the whole book could have been a lot shorter and better for it.

Some lovely bits towards the end.

Fabulous hero, let down by plot
