About this listen

When one of four potential claimants to the title of Lord Dalrymple dies a sudden, nasty death, the question on everyone's mind is, "was it murder?"

In the late 1920s in England, the Honorable Daisy Dalrymple Fletcher is recruited to help her cousin Edgar - i.e. the Lord Dalrymple. About to turn 50, Lord Dalrymple decides it is time to find out who would be the heir to the viscountcy. With the help of the family lawyer, who advertises Empire-wide, they have come up with four potential claimants. For his fiftieth birthday, Edgar invites those would-be heirs - with Daisy and the rest of the family - to Fairacres, the family estate.

In the meantime, Daisy is asked to be the family's representative at the lawyer's interviews with the claimants. Those four are a hotelier from Scarborough, a diamond merchant from South Africa, a young mixed-raced boy from Trinidad, and a sailor from Jamaica. However, according to his very pregnant wife, the sailor has gone missing.

Daisy and Alec must uncover a conspiracy if they are going to stop the killing in the latest from the accomplished master of the genre, Carola Dunn.

I wasn't sure what to expect, plus it took its time to get going, but surprisingly good. Like other comments say, the narration is a bit offputting in parts - and some of the pronunciations are a bit strange.

Surprisingly enjoyable

not one of my favourites as the narration was a bit hard to follow, but another cosy murder with intrepid amateur sleuthing!!

This is another terrific mystery, where family members try to complete for the title. Read brilliantly again by Lucy Rayner.

I have listened to all the Daisy Dalrymple books and this has been the exciting and mysterious so far! Had me guessing and gradually gathering clues.

Carola Dunn's books are always good. Lucy Rayner has a few words that she always mispronounces, such as 'portentious' for portentous (despite her very good accent as the aristocratic main character). They grate a little, but she is otherwise so good that I would feel ungracious to take one from her five stars. Audible should do more quality control - it would cost nothing to get someone suitable to pre-listen. I would happily do it in exchange for free membership!

Story and narration both excellent except ...

I absolutely love these books and am now sad to have come to the end! Fingers crossed we get another one in the series.

This is a very good mystery concerning who's attacking the candidates to be pronounced next in line for the title. it put me in mind of that much loved film Kind Hearts and Coronets.

I highly recommend this book. yet another great story in a series of them.
