Es ging mir relativ gut an diesem Julitag 1663. Ich war schwach, aber mein Geist bewegte sich. Rembrandt stieg mit kurzem Atem die Stufen zur Gasthofmansarde hinauf. Blieb einen Moment stehen. Rief nach unten: „Bring mir später Kerzen, irgendwelche Stumpen, ich muss fertig werden.“ Er betrat die kleine Kammer. Das war alles, was uns geblieben war. Ein Bett, ein Tisch, einige Spiegel, der Rest vollgestopft mit seinen Selbstporträts.
